A first look at National Sports Lounge

National Sports Lounge in Dallas, TX

Lower Greenville's newest sports bar opened quietly next to Kinki about two weeks ago, and I stopped by last night to check it out. Reviews haven't been too great, by the way, if Yelp is to be believed.

The spot looks polished, in that sanitized, chain-restaurant type way: They've got 57 high-def TVs, a sizeable list of drafts (the usual suspects) and a huge patio that overlooks Greenville. All the waitresses are cute young things in tiny shorts with sayings like "Touchdown" and "Tight End" on their behinds. (A word: Can you get some curvier girls up in the house?)

Unfortunately, service started out spotty. It took awhile to get our drinks and order food, and we never got silverware or napkins. Our waitress did apologize later, though, and said she wasn't expecting so many people on a Tuesday night. Service got better after our second round of drinks. Also liked the music, which seemed delightfully odd for a chain-type sports bar: Sufjan Stevens, Belle and Sebastian, early Stone Temple Pilots.

What to order here: Definitely the mini corndogs and the mini burgers. Both were great -- I was expecting average, and this is a shot above. Skip the slaw.

TV situation: They're everywhere here, even in the bathroom stalls and above the urinals. ("That's innovation," hubby said.) On the patio, we sat at a table with a TV mounted directly above, which felt like our own personal set.

Overall: Great if you live in the neighborhood. Sports-bar-wise, it still doesn't beat The Boardroom, which has a personal speaker box you can bring to your table to hear audio for any game you want. Draft beer also seems a little high for Dallas -- $4 Miller Lights -- but maybe they have specials on game days. That price is probably comparable to the Boardroom, by the way.

I may go back on a game day. If you've been, let me know what you thought.

And, umm... GO BEARS!
