Hot and Fresh: Playdough, 'Follow It'

Playdough

Dallas rapper Playdough has been working on his next album Hotdoggin for a while now, and he's hoping to find a label home for it soon. I think there's a good chance of that happening, considering the guy's smooth delivery and intelligent lyrics. Here's a brand new track, so you'll know what I'm talking about. See if you like the scratchy-record sounds as much as I do.

Playdough, "Follow It":

Playdough tells me the song has a down-to-earth, but still hopeful, message: "The song is about how we're all losers, we all follow the same things and sometimes our lives can get really mundane. Work ... life ... what's the point? I found a Way out."

See Playdough perform next Saturday (April 18) at the Lounge on Elm St. Flyer after the jump. I'll let this song hold you over until tomorrow. Check back, you will.

Hot and Fresh: Telegraph Canyon, 'Reels & Wires'

Telegraph Canyon

Fort Worth country-folk collective Telegraph Canyon will follow up 2006 album All the Good News with a new set coming out in August. They send along, for your listening pleasure, an unmastered track from the as-yet-untitled record.

Telegraph Canyon, "Reels & Wires":

And there's a little star power behind "Reels & Wires." Frontman Chris Johnson tells us it's produced by none other than Centro-matic's Will Johnson. Yep. Mastered or unmastered, it's a beaut.

See Telegraph Canyon play tonight at Hailey's in Denton.

Hot and Fresh: Smile Smile, 'The Attic'

Smile Smile

OK, so we couldn't convince Dallas pop duo Smile Smile's label, Kirtland, to give us a full song just yet. Members Ryan Hamilton and Jencey Hirunrusme are still finishing up new album Truth on Tape (they recently got some drum help from the Toadies' Mark Reznicek), and there's not a set release date at this point.

But Kirtland was nice enough to send us a 30-second clip of the new version of "The Attic." I think it really speaks to the progress Smile Smile has made in the studio.

Smile Smile, "The Attic" (short clip):

Texts Ryan: "The new version was produced by David Castell and makes the old version sound like a demo. It's bigger and better all the way around."

Hot and Fresh: St. Vincent, 'Actor Out of Work'

Just in time for Hot and Fresh Week, I get a press release about St. Vincent's new video being released. Perfect. It's from the highly anticipated album Actor, coming in early May. St. Vincent (Dallas' own Annie Clark) will be at the Granada on June 18. Text of press release after the jump.

Hot and Fresh: RTB2, 'When Hammer Hits Stone'

RTB2

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Denton's Ryan Thomas Becker and Grady Sandlin can do more with a guitar and a drum than a lot of bands can do with four or five pieces. Take RTB2's tried-and-true formula and add touches of studio magic to it, and you've got In the Fleshed, the new album coming this summer.

Says guitarist/singer Becker: "We took our time with the songs on this upcoming release. The tracking for one of the tunes started two years ago, which was around the same time that [the last release] The Both of It was recorded."

Here's a new track from In the Fleshed, one that delighted me when I heard it live at NX35 ...

RTB2, "When Hammer Hits Stone":

Follow the jump to read Becker's difinitive thoughts on the song.
