Good Records preview: Chameleon Chamber Group

Photo by Jason Janik/Design by Jeff Meddaugh

Geoff Johnston wrote a great piece for Quick this week about Chameleon Chamber Group, the local foursome that performs classical music with a twist. They play the Good Records party at 3:30 p.m. on the indoor stage. After the jump, find the complete Q&A with the members. And pick up Quick at your nearest rack for all the wig-dandy goodness.

New rooftop patio at Fuse

Fuse will open its rooftop patio lounge on Friday night. It's called Bamboo. Word is that there will be a more affordable menu up there (I already thought Fuse was reasonable). Beds and cabanas will surround the little reflecting pools.

Party starts at 7 p.m., and there will be drinks and tapas to sample. RSVP is required. Call 214-742-3873. Fuse is at 1512 Commerce St. fusedallas.com

UPDATE: Whoops! Just got word the party's been rescheduled to April 24, so plan accordingly.

Defending the indie: 'Gigantic'

Yes, Zac Efron's hair is a work of art, Jason Statham's pecs amaze (even with a trick heart behind them), and Russell Crowe can conquer any accent thrown at him. But that doesn't mean you should spend your movie money seeing potential blockbusters this weekend. There's plenty of time (and space on your Netflix queue) for 17 Again, State of Play and Crank High Voltage. This weekend, you need to check out Gigantic.

When I exchanged e-mails with director Matt Aselton during the AFI fest (at which the film won the top jury prize), he mentioned that the movie is more confusing than its trailer would have you believe. Well, it's definitely more layered. The trailer makes you think you're in for a sweet, subtle love story between a single guy who's obsessed with adopting a Chinese baby (Paul Dano) and a woman (Zooey Deschanel) whose quirkiness is only slightly less endearing than her puppy-dog eyes.

Sure, that's part of it, but it's only a small part.

Good Records preview: The Happy Bullets

Our favorite local band named after a euphemism for celebratory gunfire, The Happy Bullets, have a full weekend ahead of them. They're playing Saturday afternoon at the Good Records Revolution 9 birthday bash and Sunday afternoon at the Oak Cliff Earth Day festivities.

Instead of letting them rehearse for the aforementioned gigs in peace, we crashed last night's practice at Happy Bullets HQ, drank their beer, and recorded this sublime, off-the-cuff rendition of "Herbert Had a Dream." Look for it on their forthcoming album, which has been in production since the early Mesozoic era.

Presumptuous Previews

New Line Cinema

A sneak peak at movies opening this week, based solely on their commercials.

17 Again

Chandler from Friends magically turns into the dreamy dude from High School Musical then learns a life lesson or something. Heartwarming hilarity ensues.

Crank: High Voltage

The guy from The Transporter has a robot heart and has to dry hump old ladies and lick car batteries to stay alive. Jittery, migraine-inducing camerawork and generic grunt-rock theme music ensue.

State of Play

Gladiator plays an investigative journalist with Renaissance Fair hair who is trying to solve a murder or unravel a political corruption case or eat an entire box of donuts in one sitting or something. Running and yelling ensue.

Good Records preview: Florene

Florene

"Revolution 9" is upon us. I'm talking about Saturday's Good Records 9th anniversary bash being thrown in conjunction with National Record Store Day. It's one of the biggest parties of the year, and it's free. So we'll try in the next couple of days to provide you with as many reasons as possible to drop everything Saturday and get to lower Greenville. The first? Florene, an ambient-music duo from Denton scheduled to play the outdoor stage at noon.

Members Gavin Guthrie and Aaron Mollet have been doing some recording over at their friend Sleep Whale's place, and they just threw a new track up to show their progress. It's a bona fide space jam.

Florene, "Deal With It":

"The recording is 100 percent miked and 100 percent live, captured in Bruce and Joel's [of Sleep Whale] studio," Aaron tells us. "The in-between anomoly that is the 'in-studio live recording'. We finished with running it through some old analog reel-to-reel gear, and were done."

More old-school than I thought! Reason enough to get to the party early on Saturday.
