'The Hills' hearts Green River Ordinance

Jason Janik/Special Contributor

I was late in watching this week's ep of The Hills on my DVR last night, but I got a pleasant surprise. The show featured a snippet of a track from Fort Worth pop-rock band Green River Ordinance. As is usually the case with the soundtrack on that show, the song "Outside" was played during a between-scenes shot of LA traffic and vistas. Still, the crunchy guitar-fueled song had that fresh California sound so favored by the show. Way to go, GRO!

Blythe's spirit informs Central 214 menu

Last night, I had a chance to sample items from Central 214's revamped menu created by new chef Blythe Beck. The woman loves comfort foods with a twist, and it shows -- no wonder the sassy gal is called the Naughty Chef! On my plate above are a mini chili cheese dog on a pillowy bun (sadly missing from the resto's menu) and a seared diver scallop with sweet corn sauce. My favorite sampling, though, was of the prosciutto-wrapped white cheddar topped with an avocado cream sauce. It was gone so fast I forgot to snap a pic! The desserts get creative, too -- we were treated to a "naughty and nice" milk and cookies, featuring a chocolate chip cookie and a Knob Creek bourbon milkshake. Methinks I'll be leaving that snack for Santa this year.

Look out for more on Beck -- including her upcoming reality show -- in the April 30 issue of Quick.

Hump Day Happy Hour: Dragonfly

For your consideration, a happy hour standby of mine -- at Hotel Zaza's Dragonfly lounge. Tonight, after enjoying the $5 drink specials (such as the jalapeno peach "zatini," above) and perhaps a snack on Dragonfly's lounge side, you can enjoy half-priced dinner entrees on the restaurant side. After that, head over to the newly reopened Urban Oasis poolside bar to relax in the warm breeze as a DJ spins tunes.

Put on your zombie face

Halloween comes waaaaaay early this year (May 1-3) at Texas Frightmare Weekend, a horror convention that brings together freaks of every stripe to slasher screenings, celebrity appearances and other such spookiness.

Shock rocker Alice Cooper, Fairuza Balk (the girl with the possessed eyes from The Craft) and Derek Mears (Jason in the most recent remake of Friday the 13th) are among those scheduled to appear. But I was happy to hear of a planned appearance by Emily Hagins, the 12-year-old at the center of the documentary Zombie Girl: The Movie, which played to fascinated audiences at the AFI Dallas International Film Festival.

She's now 16 and onto her second film, a ghost story called The Retelling. The Austin teen will be screening the flick at the convention. Check back here for more details and for more info on Frightmare.

Q&A: James Morrison

James Morrison

Soulful British singer James Morrison comes to the Granada on Thursday with a stage show that he says might surprise his die-hard fans.

"I've always loved that sound -- whether it's Bob Dylan or whatever -- that classic band sound," Morrison told us in a phone chat. "Just a good, ballsy sound. I've got some of the best players in England -- top of their game. It will surprise people how rocked-up it is."

Dallas Cinemania presents One-Eyed Jacks

Even the most casual of film buffs will want to check out Dallas Cinemania's screening of One-Eyed Jacks tomorrow night at the Angelika.

His only excursion behind the camera, Marlon Brando starred in and directed this Wild West tale of betrayal and vengeance. This was when he was still young, handsome, and building his reputation as the greatest actor of all time; before he blossomed into a muumuu-wearing eccentric who possessed the physique and behavior of a Codeine addicted manatee.

The always awesome DJ Mr. Rid starts things off with some pre-show tunes at 7:30 p.m. and the film starts about 8:10 p.m. 5321 E. Mockingbird Ln. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased near the upstairs snack bar. Extra butter, please!

Meet Beyonce! (Spend your rent money!)

Beyonce (who is apparently transforming into a motorcycle) will perform in Dallas on July 5 at American Airlines Center. If you'd like to see her up close and personal -- and really, who wouldn't [drool sound goes here] -- she's providing lots of ways to do it, if you've got the cash.

Tickets to the general public ($20.75-$105.75 before inconvenience charges kick in) go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. You can also buy a meet-and-greet VIP package, which means all kinds of big stuff, including getting your photo taken with Beyonce. That can be yours for the low, low price of $1,000.

There are other deluxe seating packages ($475-$575) with less-awesome perks. See the details here.
