This American Life - Live!

Local public radio fans who might want to take a break from listening to KERA's current pledge drive are in luck.

Tonight, This American Life will transmit a live stage show via satellite to more than 400 movie theaters across the nation, including the AMC Mesquite 30 and AMC Northpark 15.

Host Ira Glass helms the show, which includes performances by TAL favorites such as Dan Savage, Mike Birbiglia, and David Rakoff.

Tickets are $20. It looks like NorthPark might be sold out, but if you're quick with a mouse click and want to attend the Mesquite screening, you may still be able to snag tickets here.

The simulcast begins at 7 p.m. at participating theaters. And for those who can't make it tonight, an encore performance has been added for May 7th.

Q&A: 'Sugar' star Algenis Perez Soto

Algenis Perez Soto

Algenis Perez Soto was plucked from obscurity to star in the indie film Sugar because his own life closely resembled his character's. Both grew up in the Dominican Republic, both dreamed of playing baseball in the U.S., and both eventually discovered that realizing the dream was more difficult than it seemed.

But if the similarities in backstory put Soto on the field, the subtle brilliance of the first-time actor's performance is his perfect game.

We exchanged e-mails with Soto -- who's still in the process of mastering English -- in advance of Sugar's opening Friday at the Dallas Angelika.

Gordon Keith comments on commenting commentary

gordon.JPG

Lots of local commentary this week about blog comments, and D's decision to cut them off of the FrontBurner blog.

Our dear Gordon Keith talked about it this morning on The Ticket. Coincidentally, he wrote his Quick column on the same blog-commenting topic before this week's comments blitz began. In it, he paints the Blog Commenting Nation bickering while Armageddon approaches. Interesting stuff. Read it here.
