From a press release about the new (and, in my mind, improved) 93.3:
"Cumulus Media unveiled its latest radio station this morning at 5AM. 'FM 933 Quality Rock will feature a variety of artists such as Dave Matthews Band, U2, Tom Petty, REM, Alanis Morrisette, and The Police. We've taken a close look at what the market is missing and feel FM 933 Quality Rock is a great fit for the Metroplex as well as our cluster of radio stations.' Said Cumulus Radio and FM 933 Quality Rock Vice President and Market Manager Dan Bennett."
While this might suck for diehard fans of ZZ Top and the idea of hearing "Pride and Joy" 39 times a day, I welcome the format change. On the way to work today, I heard R.E.M. and Death Cab. One worrisome matter, though: When you pull up the new station's Web site, you see a banner advertising "all Dave Matthews Band, all the time." Moderation, people. Moderation.
***** Check out the new "Quality Rock" today and let us know what you think. First person to comment gets a totally unrelated but still exciting prize: A pass for two to next Monday's preview screening of Star Trek. It's your move ...

I like the new format, but yeah, the danger is still overkill.

All in all, I think it's one of the best stations in town. Admittedly, that's a pretty low bar to meet nowadays, but hearing classic Bowie and 10,000 Maniacs is a welcome change of pace. Most of their songs are good. If they can avoid focusing too much on more typical radio fare like Matchbox 20, Dave Matthews Band, and The Fray, then this could be a real blessing to Dallas' airwaves.

If the station can perfect its playlist, then it has real potential.
For instance, recent listens have revealed The Wallflowers, Counting Crows, Barenaked Ladies, Everclear, among others being too frequently played. Based on the limited breadth and quality of their material, they're played much too often relative to everything else. Much less occasionally would be alright. The opportunity to hear other quality bands and songs is being missed.
How about playing more artists that fit the format and/or some less popular tracks from those artists already played? It's particularly frustrating hearing an older song (or artist, new or old) when it was recently played. Case in point -- I'm just now hearing yet another Counting Crows song as I write this message!
It would be terrific to have a station playing new and breaking quality music. There's not much more exciting than the anticipation of hearing a great new track the first several times. I hope the opportunity to play more recent music isn't missed and that the station's playlist can reflect it.
Anyway, it appears as though local radio has improved as a result of the format change, but that there's still ample room for the station's improvement.
I'll check it out.
