Hot and Fresh: RTB2, 'When Hammer Hits Stone'

RTB2

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Denton's Ryan Thomas Becker and Grady Sandlin can do more with a guitar and a drum than a lot of bands can do with four or five pieces. Take RTB2's tried-and-true formula and add touches of studio magic to it, and you've got In the Fleshed, the new album coming this summer.

Says guitarist/singer Becker: "We took our time with the songs on this upcoming release. The tracking for one of the tunes started two years ago, which was around the same time that [the last release] The Both of It was recorded."

Here's a new track from In the Fleshed, one that delighted me when I heard it live at NX35 ...

RTB2, "When Hammer Hits Stone":

Follow the jump to read Becker's difinitive thoughts on the song.

"I wrote the main riff ('bop bow-di-bow booooww, d'weeee!') in my boxer briefs one morning in our practice space (a bedroom at the end of a hallway in an old Denton house with its original wood flooring). It may or may not allude to visions of the Second Coming of Christ. After listening to too much Captain Beefheart (Too much? Is that possible?), I wanted to take (what I thought of as) a familiar song structure and tweak it to fit our own tastes and musical intentions. When Grady and I started working on the tune, it grew into something giant (or more like a March of Giants with a few steps missing, intentionally). The more we played the tune, the more drawn out it became. The dynamic of the song became key. From whispers to screams to whimpers to (mis)understood silences. Overplaying, underplaying. There were moments of absolute awkwardness contrasted with a tightness that two musicians could only achieve after playing together for ten years. The song became our mantra. With it, we could tap into the forbidden worlds of music that can't be written down on paper."

Whew. I need a cigarette. RTB2 plays next in Denton on April 18 at Rubber Gloves with Record Hop, and in Dallas on April 25 at the Mokah Music Summit and Showcase.
