All hail the... *erp*... awesome Dom

Sad news about the announcement today about Dom DeLuise, who died at age 75. Who can forget his many hilarious roles, but his turn as the belchy Caesar in History of the World, Part I has always been a fave.

I think I hear him belching from heaven now...

New Vega song, just in time for show tonight

Just a little note directin' you over to Gorilla Vs. Bear, which has a new summer jam from Alan Palomo's now-Austin-based project Vega. You'll like "No Reasons" if you like to dance. You'll probably hear the track live if you hit the Loft tonight: Vega opens for Shiny Toy Guns.

QBT nominee spotlight: John Congleton

Photo of John Congleton by Cabe Booth
In addition to his duties as frontman for local rock band the Paper Chase (read all about their new album in Thursday's Quick), John Congleton is an accomplished record producer and self-proclaimed workaholic.

He's recorded top local acts Sarah Jaffe, the Polyphonic Spree, St. Vincent (including Actor, about which I gushed earlier today), Mount Righteous, Black Tie Dynasty and more. His list of nonlocal collaborators is even more impressive: Modest Mouse, Explosions in the Sky, Antony and the Johnsons, the Mountain Goats and so on.

So it's no surprise that he's nominated for "Big Studio Ace" in this year's Quick's Big Thing awards (Click here for voting and more info). Congleton says there's no one genre or style he looks for when choosing which bands to produce, but that it's more about the approach to material.

"I don't know exactly what it is that I look for," he said in a recent phone chat. "Sometimes it's just timing. I guess I just look for really great songs, of course, but that's not enough - they've got to have something that makes them twisted."

I made Congleton play a little word-association game with me. I named an artist he'd produced, and he gave me the first sentence or thought that popped into his head. Read on after the jump:

St. Vincent album out today

stvcover.jpg
If you haven't picked up the current issue of Quick, you haven't had a chance to read our cover story on St. Vincent, a.k.a. Dallas-raised singer Annie Clark. Check it out online. Clark's new album, Actor, comes out today.

It's rarely left my car CD player since I got a preview copy. Already a sucker for avant-garde pop, I was sent over the edge by the woodwind intros of "The Strangers" and "Black Rainbow," the stunning mix of drums and chorus on "Save Me," and the intoxicating melody of "Laughing With a Mouth of Blood." Yeah, I pretty much have a crush on this album. Hear it for yourself after the jump if you need more convincing.
