I've blogged a few times here about Florene's live performances. It's not just the Denton band's electronic, ambient material that's notable; the way members Gavin Guthrie and Aaron Mollet deliver it to an audience is equally compelling.
Sometimes they face their listeners (and even paint themselves, as Aaron did at one Good Records show), but most of the time they are so focused on their playing that the audience feels like it's looking in on something secret. The music, while lyricless, isn't soothing and can't really qualify as "background." It's engaging, sometimes jarring and always has the power to take your mind somewhere else.
Mollet and Guthrie are still relatively new in the North Texas scene at large, but they've become a vital part of a growing community of experimental musicians in Denton. It's tight-knit but not cliquish -- there are shows featuring them and their friends nearly every week, opportunities for anyone to come in and experience a form of music that's definitely not familiar to most.
I was pleased to see Florene nominated and included in the Quick's Big Thing "Big Live Act" category. While they may not pack the largest venues in town, the guys stand out as both innovative and provocative.
Read on after the jump for Florene's well-thought-out responses to my e-mail questions about what they do and what inspires them. After that, be sure to vote for your favorites in all eight categories for Quick's Big Thing.
