Just when you think you have a handle on this year's Quick's Big Thing awards show -- happening June 5 at the Granada -- we go and add acts to the lineup. We want showgoers to enjoy live music from the very moment they arrive.
So, plan on getting there when doors open at 7 p.m. so that you don't miss pre-show performances from Denton's grimy bluesman Dale Jones, a.k.a. New Science Projects, and Grand Prairie's large-and-in-charge pop band Mount Righteous.
Mount Righteous should wow the Granada crowd with an (even) bigger, bolder sound than folks are used to. New Science Projects will preview a brand new EP before jaunting up to Denton for its official release show -- consider it a one-night North Texas tour.
Add them to our previously announced acts and you've got one hell of a show. I suggest you get to QuickDFW.com first thing Thursday when tickets go on sale. Proceeds from the $5 charge go to the North Texas Volunteer Challenge. And don't forget to vote.
DJ Slim makes Double Wide a regular destination for fans of classic soul. It's not just the chance to hear the good old stuff that keeps them coming back to his frequent Sunday gigs -- it has more to do with the DJ's deep musical knowledge and his approach to playlists.
Slim -- a.k.a. James Covey -- is more than willing to pull out tunes he thinks the audience should hear, but he's also tuned in to what people want and what will make the night more fun for his listeners. He's been nominated in the Big DJ (a fitting description, I might add) category of our Quick's Big Thing awards (VOTE HERE!).
I caught up with the guy -- recognizable to many as a waiter at Lakewood Landing -- to congratulate him and ask him some questions. Read on after the jump.
