Affairs of the art

NG_07tut01.JPG

Lots of fun stuff going on in the art world this weekend, from local, hand-crafted art to Egyptian artifacts, so let's jump right into it!

Dallas Museum of Art is extending its hours of operation this weekend to mark the last few days that the King Tut exhibit will be around. The "Tut Around the Clock" event includes 34 hours of access to the Golden Age of the Pharoahs extravaganza, kicking off with a midnight closing on Friday that features an Egyptian belly dance performance and museum tours. When the doors open again at 9 a.m. Saturday, they won't close until 7 p.m. Sunday, the final day of the Tut revelry. And the fabulosity doesn't end there -- half-price tickets will be available from midnight Saturday until 7:30 a.m. Sunday, for all you late owls/early birds.

If you want to enjoy your art out of doors, the Nasher Scupture Center kicked off its Summer at the Nasher events earlier this month. The recession-friendly Thursday Nights Free runs from 5 to 10 p.m. and features DJ Jeff Mitchell spinning tunes at 5, alfresco dining in the Nasher Cafe, also beginning at 5, Yoga in the Garden at 6 and sketching in the garden at 7. All free, including admission into the venue!

This Saturday is Etsy Dallas' latest shopping event. The Spring Bash Crafts Show goes down at South Side on Lamar from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some fun crafters that we've spotlighted in Quick, such as Nerdbomber, Harrilu and Pamela Michelle will be among the more than 50 artisans selling their wares -- everything from buttons and jewelry to clothing and wallets. Shop local and check 'em out.

Artfest is back to take over Fair Park, and this year it's going to the dogs. For the first time in its 40-year history, the outdoor event is welcoming dogs, as long as they're on a leash ... and don't lift their leg near artwork. More than 200 artists will have pieces on display and ready to sell, and live bands and cultural performances are scheduled for the May 22-24 event. General admission is $6 a day, but the first person to e-mail their name and address to ffleurima@quickdfw.com will win two passes good for Artfest admission all weekend long.

UPDATE
We have our Artfest pass winner!

GS Boyz nominated in BET Awards

Billboard story here. Seems that Arlington's GS Boyz, creators of the "Stanky Legg" (and apparent winners of Jimmy Fallon's heart), are breaking into the big time. They're up in the Best Group category against Day 26, N.E.R.D., The Roots and Three 6 Mafia. I see Jamie Foxx's name in the big list of nominees, as well. Good on 'em!
GS Boyz are also nominated for Next Big Thing at Quick's Big Thing.
