How important is knowing? Pt. 1

It's half the battle, dammit.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra drops into theaters on Friday, and what better way to count down to the movie than by remembering those awesome PSAs shown at the end of the cartoon G.I. Joe episodes that would encourage you to be a better citizen or to at least pause before doing something stupid. Stuff like reporting your tax-evading parents to the government or deciding whether to check Tommy's body for a pulse before or after grabbing hold of that live wire that's shooting out sparks and dancing wildly on the street.

Every '80s child was faced with those issues.

Oh, wait.

Anyway, watch the "Don't be in a hurry to build your treehouse" ad and take some notes.

Listen: Danny Balis, 'Tethered'

too much living front.jpgIf you saw this week's Quick, you know that Danny Balis' new CD Too Much Living comes out next month. But the first single, a gorgeous, melancholy tune called "Tethered," was added to the rotation at KHYI-FM 95.3 (The Range) yesterday. If the station's listeners have any taste to speak of (and I think they do), they'll start calling in and requesting it.

Before you turn the radio on, take a listen to the song right now:

Movie Trailer Monday: The Book of Eli

A salt-and-pepper-bearded, haggard-looking Denzel Washington roams a scorched and ravaged post-apocalyptic world, wandering into dusty towns and mini-civilizations built in the ruins. In one scene, he's surrounded by a band of weapons-wielding baddies, at which point he turns from quiet old guy to a fighting machine. What the --? The situation plays itself out again and again as unsavory types keep pursuing Washington.

Turns out he's hiding something everyone else wants, something they might to kill to have ... and something he does kill to protect, in spectacular fashion. Methinks I like this street-fightin' Denzel ...

Release date: Jan. 15, 2010

Chance of box office success: The jury's out. It's got Denzel and tons of haunting images and a plot that seems exciting, but its January release date doesn't inspire confidence. I'm wondering if whatever Denzel's protecting turns out to be a bit of a letdown.

Should you see it?: I'm gonna go out on a limb and proclaim this a must-rent.

Quick's Summer Cocktails: Blown away

IMG_1758.JPG

Quick is spotlighting terrific summer cocktails over the next few weeks, and we want you to weigh in on your favorites. Check back for the final installment Wednesday.

Hurricane

Where to get it: Hurricane Grill, 2831 Greenville Ave.

Why it's fabulous: Unlike most slushy bevs that are light on flavor from the get-go and only get more watery as they melt, the frozen hurricane at the Grill is brightly flavored, with a strong fruity taste from start to end. It was way tastier than the hurricane I sipped (OK, slammed) on Bourbon Street during a recent trip. Considering that the drink is touted as a native bev of New Orleans, that's saying a lot!

Tell us ... Where do you go for an old classic cocktail?
