Lots of mischief and merriment coming to the DF-dub in the coming weeks. Chiggity-check it out ...
The virtue of Vice: Tonight, Suite nightclub welcomes Vegas-based DJ Vice (left) to the decks for their three-year anniversary party. I got a notice that the RSVPs were coming in fast and furious on Facebook, so try to squeeze yourself into this thing before tryna roll up to da club. Maybe I'll see you there ...
Ahoy, mateys: The Fairmont Dallas hotel is one of several places that does a "dive-in" movie -- where you can watch a flick from a pool -- but it's probably got the largest "theater" out of any of the others. I visited the pool, on the hotel's rooftop, recently, and it seemed to go on forever -- it's gigantic. Not your typical hotel pool, that's for sure. So jump on in -- this Friday at 9 p.m., they'll be screening Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, and you can get bevvies and snackies from the bar menu to go along with it. Next Friday, Titanic will be screened -- you may wanna bring extra floaties for that one.
Sundays at Sunset: Once you're done being Mad (see below), head on downtown for a little nightcap. Sunset Lounge (above) just kicked off their new Sundays are Fundays event, which'll just about make you forget that it's a school night. Hornitos margaritas and beer will set you back only $3 each, well drinks are $4, and pizzas are half-off. With specials like these, you may as well prolong the weekend as long as you can ...
'Mad' about you: The Angelika Dallas is kicking off a weekly Mad Men watch party this Sunday at 9 p.m. with a screening of the third season's premiere. Seating starts at 8:30, so get there to leave enough time to sip some Don Draper (right)-inspired bevs at the bar such as the Mad Men Martini, or manly classics like scotch and soda or gin and tonic. This event's free, but seating is limited.
Check out this week's local-music profile, a Q&A with Here In Arms frontman Brent Engel. Fans of Americana are sure to get into these guys. Brent was nice enough to let me share a song from the new vinyl LP Outlaws.
Says Brent, "'Darlin'' has always been a real special song to me. ... It's about being in love. It puts a smile on my face because I mean every word of it. I wish I was really that smooth!"
If you like what you hear, head to City Tavern Saturday night for the band's CD release show, also featuring RTB2 and Life in Jersey.
I had the chance to check out a new downtown sports bar-- Draft Media Sports Lounge in the downtown Dallas Sheraton. The word "lounge" is the better term for it, because this place didn't feel like your typical sports bar.
First off, the walls weren't papered with ginormous flat-screens in every corner that the eye could see -- one can just relax here and tune out the games if one wants. If the big game is what you're here for, though, the place will accommodate you nicely. If you want to have some other type of fun, there's plenty to be had.
My group and I hung out in the loungier area of the restaurant-bar (above, behind those slinky curtains), where big sofas surrounded handsome tables. In this grown-up playroom there were also Nintendo Wii stations set up with Wii Resort (fun!), as well as a coupla pool tables and -- get this -- two private karaoke "salons" (very, very fun). My posse and I belted out tune after tune for hours. I can defs see myself stopping by for more on any random night after work.
Want a pair of tix to Saturday night's hipsteriffic Los Campesinos!/Girls/Smith Westerns show at the Granada? Alls you gotta do is be the first to e-mail me (hhauk [at] quickdfw.com) with "Campesinos" in the subject line, and a sentence or two in the body about the last great show you saw in Dallas. Yeah, I'm making you write something because I am a hard, cold bitch. Get to gettin'.
The debut album from the Dallas rapper -- who was recently featured on Quick's cover -- starts out at No. 36 on the Billboard 200 pop albums chart, right behind Kenny Chesney and ahead of Beyonce. Nice work! Wonder how many ice cream paint jobs that will afford him ...

As noted in today's "Day Tripper", newly formed hip-hop group Maxx Moon will make their official debut with tonight's Dallas performance at The Lounge. The duo is the creation of the heavy touring lyricist Astronautalis (myspace.com/astronautalis) and the rising star in vocalist/producer Picnictyme (myspace.com/picnictyme).
"If Johnny Cash made an album with Gnarls Barkley and the Gorillaz, it'd sound something like Maxx Moon", described Picnic (who recently produced tracks for rapper Johnny Polygon and "Day n Nite" artist Kid Cudi). They've only leaked a few teaser tracks, so check them out tonight, with special guest Mes the Jive Turkey, if you want a glimpse into their upcoming Maxx Moon project.
Were you captured by our cameras this past weekend at Geisha House? Click on the picture to see Quick's Club Cam gallery. And check back next Thursday for a new slideshow.
We've heard a couple of tracks from Maxx Moon, the Picnic-Astronautalis hip-hop duo: last year's hypnotizing leak "Mr. Colourful" and the newer, hyper tune "Urban Outfitters," which is on the 2009 Kixpo mix tape.
