New music: Maleveller, Boys Named Sue

Photo of Maleveller by Jason Janik

In this week's issue, out today, you'll find a feature on Dallas metal newcomers Maleveller (above). It includes a Q&A with lead singer Brian Smith, who tells us that the band will start working on an album in the next few months. In the meantime, though, you can get a taste of the Maleveller sound by downloading three demos over at Parade of Flesh. Good tunes, but not a substitute for seeing the guys live. Do that as soon as you can.

And in the Liner Notes column, I give you a heads-up on the Boys Named Sue CD release events planned for next week.

To mark Idol Records' release of the new album The Hits Vol. Sue!, the Boys will take over the Libertine on Tuesday night for a listening party. Writes singer John Pedigo in an e-mail, "We have purchased a keg for the event. Thus, party to the maximus. Come on down. It'll be great! Like going to the Mac-Donalds!" And if you like what you hear on Tuesday, you'll want to attend the official CD-release show on Sept. 11 (with the King Bucks) at Sons of Hermann.

Here's a song from the new album to tide you over until Tuesday. Stream it hard.

Boys Named Sue, "You Got Barred":

Last night ...

Or perhaps I should call this an update of yesterday's Hump Day Happy Hour. I indeed took advantage of Monica's Wednesday drink special, enjoying 75-cent margaritas with the purchase of my entree. Have to say I've never been thrilled by the fare at the Deep Ellum location, but the fish tacos I had last night -- with perfectly fried fillets topped in chipotle mayonnaise and wrapped in flour tortillas -- was a home run of a dish. And the house queso was outstanding, as well, a cut above many others I've had. But the star of the show, of course, were the cheap margs -- cheap in price only. They were perfect cocktails, all, and I'm glad there was a three-drink limit with the special price -- I could've sipped these all night! Be warned -- the place fills up quickly on cheap marg night, so get there early ...
