I got into all kinds of mischief all around town. The good kind, of course ;-)
On Friday, I attended a private reception preceding Dallas Rocks' gala Diamond Dinner. The party was hosted by Russell Simmons (above -- thanks, Elijah Wheaton, for the pic!), who is founder of D.E.F., the Diamond Empowerment Fund, which teams with major players in the diamond industry to empower and educate Africans. I briefly met with Russell, who was warm and personable and mingled with everyone. About 30 minutes after chatting with him, who should enter the party but Louise, one of the Dallas contestants (recently kicked off) of this season's Project Runway! Had to corner her ...
What if a stranger offered you $1 million dollars just for pressing a button in a box? Sweet, huh? Now what if the catch were that getting the money involved someone you don't know dropping dead? That's the dilemma that faces James Marsden and Cameron Diaz in the upcoming thriller The Box.
Compounding the couple's problem is that he's just lost his job and the family's bills are starting to pile up. So pressing the button sounds like a great idea. But then there's that pesky death to contend with. As the couple starts snooping around to learn the whereabouts of the stranger with the box, they run into all kinds of creepy figures and scary situations. And there's a deadline -- they have only 24 hours to decide whether to press the death-and-money button.
Release date: Nov. 6
Chance of box office success: Not good. The movie would probably land near the top any other week, but it's being released alongside Disney's digital version of A Christmas Carol, featuring Jim Carrey, and George Clooney's The Men Who Stare at Goats. And the following week, all of the above will likely be swept away by Roland Emmerich's end-of-the-world disaster flick, 2012.
Should you see it?: Sure, if Cameron Diaz overacting with a hokey Southern accent doesn't drive you absolutely nuts. Otherwise, I'd call it a must-rent.
Get your zombie outfit and dancing shoes ready... Our ghouls-in-crime at the DMN paused from feeding on corpses to inform us:
Two local haunts are participating in Thrill the World, a worldwide simultaneous dance to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" that aims to break the Guinness World Record for the most people doing the dance at once.
Hangman's House of Horrors and Six Flags Over Texas are both taking part. Thrill the World dances officially begin Saturday at 7:30 p.m., though Six Flags asks that zombie wannabes arrive early for 7 p.m. dance instruction.
There'll be a free morning dance workshop Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Hangman's for those who want to participate in the nighttime dance there (it's also free to participate in the dance). Six Flags hosts ones workshops tonight and Saturday at 7 p.m. (paid admission is required to participate in the Six Flags events).
Organizers at Hangman's say the Guinness folks are picky: They require that people actually know the dance (just shuffling around doesn't cut it) and wear a zombie-ish costume. The Web site for Thrill the World has a copy of the dance script and videos to help you get your zombie march just right.

I've got a pair of general-admission tickets to the Boneyard haunted house just burning a hole in my office drawer. So put out the fire and be the first to e-mail me your name and address to ffleurima@quickdfw.com to win them! I'm waiting ...
UPDATE: We've got a winner -- no worries, though. I'll be giving away a pair every day this week, so look for the bowl of candy tomorrow.
This year's Red River Rap Battle took similar shape to the actual football game on Saturday. In a down-to-the-wire race, Tahiti (rapping for Texas) wins Quick's fifth-annual battle. Kudos to Pikahsso, the self-described "underdog," for making it a squeaker with his Oklahoma rhymes.
Thanks to both rappers, producer VohnBeatz, S1 and Jason Janik for their work on this year's battle, and thanks to all who voted. For a recap, where you can watch the video and download the track, go here.
