Day Tripper: Best events for the weekend
FRIDAY
Prince's 1984 breakthrough Purple Rain nabbed an Oscar -- for the music, not the acting. (Sweet sassy molassey, not for the cringe-worthy acting.) But it's still a great rock 'n' roll flick, with Prince's classic "When Doves Cry," "Let's Go Crazy," "The Beautiful Ones" and the title anthem. Throw in some comic relief from Morris Day and the Time, along with the hubba-hubba Apollonia, and you're ready to purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka. Midnight (also Saturday at midnight). Inwood Theatre, 5458 W. Lovers Lane. $10. 214-764-9106 or www.landmarktheatres.com.
Austin-based singer Bob Schneider's pop-rock is accessible yet unpredictable, so it's easy to see why several of his songs have been featured on TV and in movies. This fall, he released Lovely Creatures, which spawned the catchy "40 Dogs (Like Romeo and Juliet)," along with beautiful gems such as "Changing My Mind" featuring Patty Griffin. 9 p.m. House of Blues, 2200 N. Lamar St. $20 and $35. 1-800-745-3000 or ticketmaster.com.
Shake off that hangover and start your year with some laughs. The Sucker Punch Comedy Tour matches three Texas comics who should do the trick -- Dustin Ybarra, Nick Guerra and Anthony Perez. 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. (also Saturday at 8 and 10:30 p.m.) Hyena's Comedy Nightclub, 5321 E. Mockingbird Lane. $10 and $15. 214-823-5233 or hyenascomedynightclub.com.

Matthew Gray, One Hundred Flowers, Cartographers, Manned Missiles. 8 p.m. Hailey's, 122 Mulberry St., Denton. $3-$5. 940-323-1160. haileysclub.com.
SATURDAY
The lead singer of the Jonas Brothers, Nick Jonas -- the one family members jokingly call "the president" -- has decided to form his own band for a little while. Hence, "Nick Jonas and the Administration." Clever name, but what's the music like? Well, it's a worthwhile mix of blue-eyed-soul and bluesy pop-rock (a la John Mayer). It shows a bit more promise and maturity than the JoBros' past efforts. Let the screaming begin. 8 p.m. (second show on Sunday at 7 p.m.) House of Blues, 2200 N. Lamar St. $39.50 and $49.50. 1-800-745-3000 or ticketmaster.com.
Texan and SMU alum Jack Ingram has built a strong following in the country music world over the years, hitting No. 1 on the country charts in 2005 with "Wherever You Are," and getting to No. 10 earlier this year with "Barefoot and Crazy." He should have many friends and diehards in the audience at this one. 10.30 p.m. Billy Bob's Texas, 2520 Rodeo Plaza, Fort Worth. $12-$18. 817-624-7117 or billybobstexas.com.
If you've been listening to country radio over the past year, you'd know the Zac Brown Band has gotten a lot of love -- first on the charts with the ubiquitous Jimmy Buffett-style "Toes," and then with three Grammy nominations. Head north and sing along to the life-loving tune "Chicken Fried." 8 p.m. Winstar World Casino, an hour north of Dallas on I-35, just across the Oklahoma border. $30-$70. winstarworldcasino.com.

Secret Ghost Champion, Igneous Grimm. 9 p.m. Lola's Sixth, 2736 W. 6th St., Fort Worth. $6. 817-877-0666. lolasfortworth.com.
SUNDAY
Blues master B.B. King is showing no signs of stopping. He keeps an active touring schedule that brings him to Dallas once or twice a year. Though he might not strut up and down the stage much anymore, his phenomenal guitar skills and emotion-drenched music keep fans plenty happy. 7:30 p.m. Nokia Theatre, 1001 Performance Place, Grand Prairie. $59.75-$89.75. 1-800-745-3000 or ticketmaster.com.
The Avett Brothers specializes in jangly Americana folk that's a perfect accompaniment to earnest, often sweet lyrics. The band got a big boost when "If It's the Beaches" was featured in an episode of Friday Night Lights, and now the reflective single "I and Love and You" is gaining attention on VH1 and on the Billboard charts. 8 p.m. Granada Theater, 3524 Greenville Ave. Sold out. 214-824-9933 or granadatheater.com.
