Day Tripper: Best events for the weekend

What makes a masterpiece? How about great performances by Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft, a slew of memorable quotes ("Would you like me to seduce you?" "Plastics!") and a wonderful Simon and Garfunkel soundtrack. Hard to believe the Mike Nichols-directed classic The Graduate came out 42 years ago. See it again at midnight (also Saturday at midnight). Inwood Theatre, 5458 W. Lovers Lane. $10. www.landmarktheaters.com.

Destroyer, a.k.a. Canadian singer-songwriter Dan Bejar, makes changes to his sound with every new group of collaborators that comes along. His latest releases are the '70s-rock influenced 2008 album Trouble in Dreams, and the 2009 EP Bay of Pigs, which had more of an electronic feel. Opening will be local rising stars Sarah Jaffe and RTB2. 7 p.m. Granada Theater, 3524 Greenville Ave. $12 and $15. granadatheater.com.

You'll remember Jamie Kennedy from his short-lived comedy show The Jamie Kennedy Experiment, the Scream movies, Three Kings and more recently from his stint alongside girlfriend Jennifer Love Hewitt in The Ghost Whisperer. Don't let those roles fool you, though -- Kennedy delivers hard-core adult laughs with an easygoing manner. 6:30 and 9 p.m. (also various times Saturday and Sunday). Addison Improv, 4980 Belt Line Road, Suite 250. $22. 972-404-8501. improv.com.

Deadmau5 performs at 8 p.m. House of Blues, 2200 N. Lamar St. $20-$50. ticketmaster.com.

There's a new CD on the way from A Revolution of Kings, the Denton three-piece alt- rock band. In their band bio, the guys brag, "We like to rock and/or roll. We also might eat your babies." OK! With the Timeline Post, Exeter and Rivalmen. 9 p.m. Andy's, 122 N. Locust St., Denton. $5. 940-565-5400. myspace.com/andysbar.

Teenage Cool Kids' latest album, Foreign Lands, is one of the most satisfying local records of the year -- a little more than half an hour of lo-fi rock arrangements, infectious melodies and dreamy "oohs." Fans of headliner Health should arrive early. With Times New Viking and the Axemen. 8 p.m. The Lounge on Elm St., 2810 Elm St. $14-$18. paradeofflesh.com.

See Saturday and Sunday events, including Kevin Smith, David Cook and Snoop Dogg, after the jump.

Some gentle, Giant fun before the debauchery

We all know the outfits will be wild tonight, in that "put-naughty-in-every-costume" kind of way. Things were much more wholesome earlier today during They Might Be Giants' family show at House of Blues.

Like most of the youngsters in the crowd, the Johns -- Flansburgh and Linnell -- dressed up for the occasion. Flansburgh wore a Wild Things-styled furry hat and tie, and Linnell donned a skeleton mask that covered his face for most of the show.

The duo has a new kids' CD out (Here Comes Science), and also dabbled in tracks from their three other family discs. For those who haven't dipped into that stuff, they still played "adult" crowd-pleasers "Particle Man," "Older," "Doctor Worm" and the rousing closer, "Birdhouse in Your Soul." The Giants even offered brief snippets of Edgar Winter's "Free Ride" and, in a strange and wonderful surprise, Del the Funky Homosapien's "Mistadobalina."

Hard to tell who was having more fun, the kid fans or the adult fans. A young Batgirl threw the rock 'n' roll hand sign at the band while atop her dad's shoulders. And, in sad and sweet scenes, a handful of kids who probably had never been to a concert before were wide-eyed at the first loud guitar sounds, and covered their ears.

As always, Flansburgh kept the adults laughing. He suggested any factual errors in the concert staple "Why Does the Sun Shine?" would be taken seriously, and should be sent directly to Duran Duran. In a hilarious puppet-show segment, his puppet claimed to enjoy the Giants' music, though mostly the early stuff, and that they kinda fell off after Apollo 18.

Check out more Giants fun at their site, and our Q&A with Flansburgh here.

Setlist: Brand New at the Palladium

Listening to a Brand New album is the equivalent of your girlfriend breaking up with you over the phone. Or by e-mail. Or worse, text message.

You hear notes ring out in a frenzy of distortion and feedback while the lyrics bleed breakup excuses such as "I want to see other people" and "We're just not the right fit for each other, you know?"

Every time you listen to a track, the same emotions come flooding back. There is no escaping the hurt, the betrayal and the time spent with each other.

Experiencing Brand New live, however, takes that breakup and shoves it in the face of your former lover. Mosh pits surge while bodies sweat against each other. Arms and limbs of complete strangers intrude other's personal space. And angst-ridden screams come together in perfect harmony while everyone's pain is washed away in a tide of togetherness.

That's what it felt like Friday night at the Palladium Ballroom: a giant breath of fresh air and renewal.

Playing 19 songs and leaving without an encore, Brand New reminded fans why the quartet began making music in the first place - to deal with life.

Gone were any songs from the band's first album, Your Favourite Weapon, which on past tours were set list staples. Instead, 15 of the 19 songs came from the band's two recent releases, 2006's God and the Devil Are Raging Inside Me and 2009's Daisy.

While bodies swayed and heaved to fan favorites such as "Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't" and "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows," fans backed up lead singer Jesse Lacey with vocals on "Play Crack the Sky" and the ever-building chorus of "Limousine."

High point: The fans. If the crowd wasn't into the show as much as they were tonight, the entire night would have fallen flat on its face.

Low point: No songs from Your Favourite Weapon. Not even "Seventy Times 7," a song which closed most shows on past tours. Fans who may not have liked the band's new material were more than likely disappointed with the show.

Thrice, experimental rockers from Irvine, Calif., played a 10-song set that was heavy on harmonic feedback and hormonal emotional screams courtesy of front man Dustin Kensrue.

Day Tripper: Best events for the weekend

FRIDAY

Maybe these two acts come from different eras and don't exactly mesh musically, but they're definitely kindred spirits in the art of provocative live performance. The Butthole Surfers, a beloved Texas alt-rock band fronted by Gibby Haynes, is touring again with its reunited '80s lineup. Back in their '80s heyday, the Pogues merged traditional Irish music with the spirit of punk rock, including tracks such as "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" and the boozy Christmas classic "Fairytale of New York." See 'This is It' for the man, not the music

michael-jackson-this-is-it-rehearsal.jpg

Don't call Michael Jackson's This is It a concert film. To do so would oversell the often shaky musical rehearsals seen throughout. No, this movie's more of documentary. An unusual documentary, no doubt, but we'd expect nothing less from a project involving the late king of pop.

For those wondering how it's structured (and I've gotten this question quite a bit since Tuesday): Consider it a mostly chronological document of the making of an uber-expensive concert that never was. We see the dancer auditions, the filming of special videos to be used as backdrops, the constant practicing of the concert band to get performances up to Jackson's level of perfectionism.

And we see Michael Jackson. Not the handler-controlled, shy recluse. Not the publicity-seeking, controversy-riddled pop star who seems stuck in neverending childhood. Not even a singer and dancer who's on top of his game.

In This is It, we see a dangerously thin but focused and determined Jackson in his most grown-up state yet. He's still innocent and silly, but he's also keenly aware of the leaps and bounds he'll have to achieve to get to that first scheduled show in London. And smart, purposeful ordering of the rehearsal performances in the film shows his progression in that aspect.

At the beginning, one can't help but wince at his weakened voice and not-so-perfect dance moves while working out "Wanna Be Startin' Something." But he gets stronger throughout, and we see the guy who amazed all of us come back in fine form. Try to take your eyes off him as he performs "Billie Jean" alone on stage.

But, like I said, one shouldn't go into this film expecting the performances to be the highlight. For those who love Michael, there's much more to glean from the in-between-song scenes showing the singer interacting with his tour band and dancers.

You get the sense that he wasn't aware of cameras, for once. He's trying to get in the zone creatively, trying to relay to his band how he wants a groove played, encouraging his guitarist to go all out because it's "your moment to shine. We're all there with you."

I doubt the world's ever seen a kinder, gentler pop genius.

Finally, the official release date for new Midlake LP

midlake.jpg

It's been nearly three years since Midlake's The Trials of Van Occupanther topped our 2006 year-end local-albums list and enjoyed critical praise from, oh, everybody else. So you can imagine how painful the wait for new material has been for fans of the Denton band. But today we get a glimmer of hope, if only a glimmer.

From a press release:

MIDLAKE SET TO RELEASE AMBITIOUS, ENGROSSING NEW ALBUM 'THE COURAGE OF OTHERS' - THEIR FIRST IN OVER THREE YEARS - ON FEB 2 VIA BELLA UNION

FIRST US TOUR DATES SINCE 2007 ANNOUNCED

On Feb 2, 2010 Bella Union will release the eagerly anticipated new Midlake album 'The Courage of Others,' the follow-up to the group's 2006 breakout 'The Trials of Van Occupanther.' The eleven original songs on 'Courage' were written by Tim Smith and produced by Midlake at their new custom-built studio in Denton, TX. The band's lineup remains: singer Tim Smith, Paul Alexander on bass, drummer McKenzie Smith, and guitarists Eric Pulido and Eric Nichelson.

'Courage' builds on the complex textures that made 'Van Occupanther' a touchstone, revealing breathtaking soundscapes and bygone eras. Equal parts intimate and epic, the album evokes a cloistered world of its own with dreamlike melodies, stunning vocal harmonies and ambitious arrangements.

Midlake took a two year break from the road to focus on the new album, but will tour extensively in 2010, with an initial string of dates and a return to SXSW - genesis of the 'Van Occupanther' groundswell in 2006 - already confirmed.

CD giveaway: 'Twilight Saga: New Moon' soundtrack

new moon art.jpg

Boy, you 'Twilight' fans are gonna love this one.

I've got a couple of CD copies of the brand-spankin'-new 'New Moon' soundtrack to give away to the first two takers. E-mail me at hhauk@quickdfw.com, and include in the subject line whether you're on Team Edward or Team Jacob. Contest over. We had an Edward-loving winner and a Jacob-loving winner.

All teen silliness aside, the soundtrack is damn fine. From the downtrodden Death Cab single "Meet Me On the Equinox", to unreleased Thom Yorke goodie "Hearing Damage" and Anya Marina's gorgeous "Satellite Heart," this thing reaches far beyond the musical tastes of the average teenage girl.

Upon popping it in, I was obviously most interested in the duet between Bon Iver and Dallas-raised St. Vincent. Not disappointing in the slightest:

If you aren't one of the lucky winners this morning, find out how to get the soundtrack here, or just download it here.

Quick Q&A: Erykah Badu

Associated Press photo

Erykah Badu and her DJ collective, the Cannabinoids, will represent their state at this weekend's Red Bull Sound Clash event. The concert is tied in with Texas-OU festivities; it pits Badu's group of locals against Oklahoma-based indie-pop act Shiny Toy Guns in a friendly battle of the bands.

The free concert will happen Friday night at the AT&T Plaza in front of American Airlines Center. To find out more about Sound Clash, we caught up with Badu by phone from her Dallas home last week. We also managed to ask her about her frequent tweeting, the second volume of her New Amerykah album and more.

How's everything?

Good. Everything's good. I'm getting ready to go to Russia in the morning.

What's in Russia?

I have a show. I think this is my second year having a show there, in Moscow.

What's your impression of it?

It's beautiful. The architecture is really beautiful. It's just like you would imagine. Very windy. Kinda reminds me of a mini-Miami though. Very Westernized.

Tell me about the Sound Clash event coming up. How'd you get involved with it and what will it entail

It's a Red Bull function, and how it works is, one band battles another band with a little friendly rivalry. There's a big stage, and we go back and forth doing a combination of one another's songs and an interpretation of another song, then we kinda end with a finale. We get together and meet each other and rehearse beforehand.

Kinda like the tap-dancing "challahnge" on that old 'Cosby Show' episode?

[Laughs.] Yeah, challahhhhhnge. We're gonna go against Shiny Toy Guns.

Are you familiar with their music or getting familiar as you get ready for the event?

Oh, yeah, the Cannabinoids and I are studying their stuff and listening. We've had a couple of powwows about the kind of sounds we want to use to change their music up a little. I'm even more interested to see how they are going to interpret our songs.

The Roots have done a Sound Clash event before. Have you gotten any insight from them?

I haven't talked to them about it. ?uestlove's been pretty busy. He's working on the Jimmy Fallon show. But I do plan to get some inside information about it from him.

Last night ...

greg2.JPG

I had my second opportunity this year to witness singer-songwriter Greg Laswell's (above) greatness. Like his Prophet Bar appearance several months ago, his set at the Granada was simple and spare, though this time, he didn't even have a small backing band, it was just us and him. His voice was in fine form, especially on favorites "How the Day Sounds" and "I'm Not Out." Bravo! But when you come back, Greggie, would ya please bring everyone required to play "Days Go On"? Please?

Greg was actually the opening act for Fran Healy and Andy Dunlop (below), the lead singer and lead guitarist, respectively, of the highly regarded Scottish alt-rock band Travis. Not being familiar with their work, I hadn't planned on staying for long, but Healy's mesmerizing vocals and hilarious stories -- which required a slideshow -- kept me glued to my seat. Fabulous night overall.

travis.JPG

On a related note, the Granada show was all seated -- even on the floor. I'd never seen an arrangement like that there, where guests were ushered to their seats. I kind of loved it!

Shout-out to my friend, Elijah Wheaton, for sharing his terrific photos of the show

Hot and fresh: Daniel Folmer, 'Open Arms'

From today's Liner Notes column:

Denton folk troubadour Daniel Folmer is beginning the fall with another new album, a follow-up to January's unexpectedly poppy collection The Roaring Twenties. This new set, Dead End, is a return to the lovelorn, lonesome sound for Folmer, and will be released with a show Saturday at J&J's in Denton.

The singer actually recorded Dead End's tracks - including the goodbye-letter title track and the lilting love ballad "Open Arms" - early last year with producer John Congleton.

"It was written right during a time when my girlfriend had left town and my closest friends were all moving away at once," Folmer told us in an e-mail. "Basically, it explores the ideas of loss and being left behind to sort out the mess. Though I was very active in school, music, hockey and work, I felt very much alone and very sedentary without my comrades."

Daniel Folmer, "Open Arms":

Red River Rap Battle: Meet the crew

rap crew.jpg

Let's take a moment to meet the rappers and the producer for this year's Texas-OU hip-hop battle.

PIKAHSSO (rapping for Oklahoma)

A.K.A.: "Buck Buchanan," a nickname my granddaddy called me, 'cause I was big when I was a kid.

Favorite rapper: Big Daddy Kane

Favorite football player: Tony Dorsett. When I was little I used to look up to him for some reason.

If you played football, what position would you be? Probably wide receiver. I've always thought that was a cool position. And all the cheerleaders love wide receivers.

Why you should win the battle: Because I'm the underdog as OU, being that we're in Texas land. Nothing more beautiful than an underdog winning a championship, battle, game or whatever.

Check out my music at: pikahsso.com

TAHITI (rapping for Texas)

A.K.A.: "Ewwww, get away!"

Favorite rapper: Kool Keith

Favorite football player: Doug Williams

If you played football, what position would you be? Left out

Why you should win the battle: Why not?

Check out my music at: myspace.com/AwkQuarius

VOHNBEATZ (the producer)

Favorite rapper: Drake

Favorite football player: LaDainian Tomlinson

If you played football, what position would you be? Tailback

Who should win the battle? I say it's a DRAW.

Check out my music at: myspace.com/vohndee

Red River Rap Battle: Tahiti takes the early lead

Jason Janik/Special Contributor

Tahiti (rapping for Texas) has the early lead in our fifth-annual Texas-OU hip-hop clash, but we have a long way to go till game day. A sample of last Friday's Wilco show

wilco.jpg

Judging by the capacity crowd at last Friday's Wilco show (recap here), one wonders if the band could've filled up a larger venue (AAC?). Maybe, maybe not. But I'm glad they were at the Palladium. Good views for everybody, excellent sound and a friendly crowd of fanatics.

Probably the best live show I've seen all year. And, since one of our readers was kind enough to share a link to his recording of the show in an earlier comment, I thought I'd play a little bit of what he captured for you.

This was one of the more memorable moments of the night, when Jeff Tweedy turned the mic toward the crowd and let them sing most of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot fave "Jesus, Etc." They mostly did him proud, only flubbing a few lines. Put on your headphones, turn up the volume and enjoy:

Wilco (feat. Dallas), "Jesus, Etc.":

Now, I wasn't at the U2 show on Monday at Cowboys Stadium. But I bet there were more than a few fans there who would have sacrificed "the Claw" and the cool video effects for a scaled-down, better sounding show like the Vertigo-supporting AAC concert in 2005. Going smaller isn't always a bad thing. Wilco knows that.

Day Tripper: Best events for Wednesday, Oct. 14

We're intrigued by new Dallas duo Hormones, made up of bassist Michael Beard and drummer/singer Jordan Williams. But there'll be at least five more new tunes unveiled at the EP-release show. With a DJ set by Wild in the Streets. 9 p.m. The Cavern, 1914 Greenville Ave. $6. 214-828-1914. thecaverndallas.com.

The Red River Rap Battle 2009: Pikahsso vs. Tahiti

To kick off Texas-OU week, we present Quick's fifth-annual Red River Rap Battle. This year, the battle divides one of D-FW's best hip-hop duos, AwkQuarius. So it's Pikahsso (rapping for Oklahoma) and Tahiti (rapping for Texas), in a track that was produced by VohnBeatz, the 11-year-old whiz kid.

Watch the video, download the song, check out the lyrics, leave your comments and vote for a winner! [voting now closed, see who won here].

PIKAHSSO TAHITI
Let the games begin, it's the Red River battle
Longhorns will get torn, you heard that like cattle
You know Pikahsso will win it with ease
Crimson and cream gave your team the mad cow disease
Longhorns on point just like push pins
I rep Texas like Jenna of the Bush twins
We on the goal line pushing
Your dome gets mushed in like they're seat cushions
Y'all wack, in fact, we'll break down your line
Get sacked and coach Mack gon' start crying
You'll fumble and crumble, our defense is a mob
Antwan on the lawn, ate up like corn Cobb
Sorry Sooners, it ain't your time
Y'all been jumping the line since 1889
This ain't Rodgers and Hammerstein
UT leaves you silent like pantomime
So sick, we move quick, Bob Stoops got the plan
"Hi Rickety" scream Texas fans in the stands
Y'all quarterback lacks skills, so make him waterboy
At the game he'll be shamed, cause we the real McCoys
OU better back down or Mack Brown
Is gonna hand ol' Bob Stoops a smackdown
Your QB saw a light and heard a crack sound
Another sack got him lying on his back now
OK, don't play, we gon' achieve our goals
Y'all milk will get spilled and fill the Cotton Bowl
Our team got steam that y'all can't endure
My guys will fertilize and use you for manure
Longhorns 'bout to do what it do
OU couldn't beat BYU
Texas don't want to be like you
So please don't cry when we beat you
Oh, man, understand, your colors are so odd
Orange-white don't look right, I'm changing it to mauve
Now think -- hot pink is what you gonna wear
You'd look tight with red-and-white ribbons in your hair
We gonna be in the end zone all day
Dancing with the stars like Tom DeLay
Sooners is laying there, still on the Earth
Stone cold, fool, like Brian Bosworth
Thank God, Pom Squad be raising up the spirit
We enjoy to destroy and Texas knows they fear it
The crowd yells loud, Sooners are the best
By the half that calf gon' mooove off your chest
Collapse your defense like an economy
Our running backs cut lines like a lobotomy
Run up the score and ruin your day
Laughing on the side with Matthew McConaughey
I came to bring pain and get into ya mind
"Hook 'em horns" will transform into a Boomer sign
When I spit don't forget to put it on your TiVo
I'm through, OU is branded on Bevo
OU needs to beat it like Ringo
You wanna win, go to Choctaw Bingo
Plus you won't get a ring, yo
You'll be singing a sad song like Placido Domingo

Setlist: Wilco at the Palladium Ballroom

wilco_wideweb__470x4250.jpg

If Jeff Tweedy and his Wilco bandmates weren't having the time of their lives on stage earlier tonight at the Palladium, they sure fooled me. During a mammoth 135 minute performance (which included two encore sets), Tweedy seemed giddy when interacting with the capacity crowd.

He commanded their handclaps, directed them during singalongs and even traded shirts with a lucky audience member. That dude ended up with Tweedy's flannel getup, and the singer found himself performing in a cheesy '80s gold-lamé top for the remainder of the show. Admiring himself in his new shirt, Tweedy told its old owner, "Yeah, you got screwed on this deal, I'm pretty sure."

Silliness aside, the six-piece Chicago band delivered the kind of expansive, experimental takes on tunes that drew so many fans to the groundbreaking albums Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and A Ghost Is Born. Even some of the more back-to-basics songs from the latest two Wilco records, Sky Blue Sky and Wilco (the album), benefited from added live muscle.

Tweedy's voice was in top form; he sounded particularly strong and clear on fan favorite "Kamera," and let out piercing rock 'n' roll screams on the very last song, "I'm a Wheel." But the biggest revelation in seeing Wilco live in its current lineup is guitarist Nels Cline. He proved as versatile as they come, creating chaotic, rapturous noise with pedals during some songs and finding countless ways to attack melody lines during others.

There's no question that Wilco's one of the most skilled rock (or, if you insist, alt-country) bands you can see live. And the players seem to enjoy the concert experience just as much as their audience does.

Done with the gushing; find the set list from tonight after the jump.

FRIDAY

After a few years of worthwhile sonic experimentation (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, A Ghost is Born), Jeff Tweedy and Wilco have returned to their alt-country roots on the last couple of releases. Setlist: Kings of Leon at American Airlines Center

(Not my video, but the only one I could find on YouTube that shows the band, the crowd and the stage/video-board setup.)

Gotta admit, I was a little concerned when less than a third of the arena was full during opening act White Lies' set earlier tonight. I thought maybe headliner Kings of Leon had overestimated its draw. Slowly but surely, though, the place filled up, and by the time the Tennessee band took the stage around 9:15, most of the seats and a big portion of the floor had been populated with enthusiastic fans.

And KOL delivered near perfect renditions of its better-known songs, a majority from its latest album Only By The Night. The brothers (and cousin) Followill are enjoying the big time, even if singer Caleb acknowledged it might not last forever: "I hope next time we come out we have all these people, but if we don't, we've had a helluva year," he said before taking a shot of Tequila and launching into "Manhattan."

The band wisely saved biggest smash "Use Somebody" for the second-to-last song during the encore set, and Caleb made a funny regarding its ubiquity after it ended: "This is when all the people that were here for the wrong reason get up and walk out. That's ok, I still love you."

But most of the fans around me knew every song, not just the one. After the jump you'll find the setlist for tonight. Feel free to weigh in with your thoughts on the show.

Playlist: Charles Cave of White Lies

The Kings of Leon concert tonight at AAC will get off to a moody, new-wave-tinged start with opening band White Lies. The U.K. threesome has built a following in its home country comparable to its tourmate's here, debuting at No. 1 there in January with latest album To Lose My Life.

We asked the band to come up with a playlist of songs it's enjoying right now. Here are the answers, from the keyboard of bassist Charles Cave:

1. Dirty Projectors - "Useful Chamber": This album has been almost on constant rotation. It keeps amazing me. It comprises what I love about bands like Deerhoof and Talking Heads but with this insane dictatorship orchestration that not only pushes the boundaries of music but of arrangement and organisation of ideas.

2. Peter Gabriel - "San Jacinto": This song sounds like travel. It sounds like a fantastic journey and that's what I look forward to on the long road we're on. The lyrics are great and the way the song builds is fragile and I think, pretty profound.

3. Joni Mitchell - "Coyote": Yeah I suppose it is jazz. But the poetry is next to none and to be able to write and perform something so provocative and touching takes more soul than most of us have.

4. Smashing Pumpkins - "Cherub Rock": Siamese Dream (the album) means so much to me. I love the sound, I love the songs. This song makes me feel alive and want to lock myself in my room and play guitar for hours and hours until my blisters are bleeding.

5. Memory Tapes - "Bicycle": This is a new act who's album I have listened to a lot. If I'm honest, nothing else on the record comes too close to this track. The mood is really perfect and it has a melancholy yet euphoric quality that I feel White Lies attempt, too.

6. Simon and Garfunkel - "Overs": What a perfect song. It says everything you feel and is funny at the same time. Paul Simon is my personal hero. He sees the darkness is the good and the light in the bad. This song does wild things to my heart.

Lllove the Joni Mitchell pick. Wonder if he's seen her performance of it in The Last Waltz ...

Hot and fresh: Smile Smile, 'Tempo Bledsoe'

We wake up this morning to an important announcement from Dallas pop duo Smile Smile: Its long-awaited new album Truth on Tape will be out Feb. 16, 2010 on Kirtland Records. Still a while to go, but members Ryan Hamilton and Jencey Hirunrusme are making it easier by releasing videos of new songs through the end of the year. The first, "Tempo Bledsoe," is above and contains everything a good music video requires: a bouncing lyric ball, odd choreography and playground equipment. Whoo-hoo-hoo!

Video: Q-Tip and Norah Jones, 'Life is Better'

Yeah, I've blogged about this song (from Tip's The Renaissance) before -- it happens to be my most-played track of the year. Just ask my iTunes. But it's weird that a video wasn't released until today. Did they forget about it until now? Or do they need an extra little bit of online buzz to help sales of Tip's long-shelved Kamaal the Abstract album?

Whatever it is, I'm glad we have footage of these two artists dancin' and havin' fun. I think this is one of Norah's best and most nuanced vocals ever. Enjoy again and again.

New Crash That Took Me record in November

CTTM_Cover_1200.JPG

Idol Records prez Erv Karwelis tells me The Crash That Took Me's upcoming sophomore CD is "amazing." One thing's for sure -- that's one amazing album cover. The record's street date is Nov. 10, with a release show planned for Nov. 7 at Sons of Hermann.

Press release:

CHLORINE COLORED EYES

The Crash That Took Me's sophomore record is a wonderland of sonic swirls, a roller coaster ride of emotional and psychedelic landscapes. On Chlorine Colored Eyes The Crash has captured beautiful dynamics ranging from a single mellotron to a full wall of sound and have picked up where the Beatles left off with the tape experimentation from their psychedelic stint in the late 60s, also reverting back to other experimental methods on tape machines such as (A.D.T.) automatic double tracking for all the vocals, varied speed, reverse and many other methods. The band also spent time recording at a paper machine factory to capture the repetition and sounds coming out of the factory.

The Crash have tapped into the tension and beauty of the late sixties lyrically and sonically, but still falling down the worm hole to evolve into something unique of their own.

The record was recorded produced and mixed by Casey Diiorio at "Vintage Heavy" Valve Studios, Dallas TX. Recorded analog to 2" tape mixed down to 1/2" and mastered by Sean Magee (Beatles Mono box set) at Abbey Road Studios in London,

Eric, Camille and the puppets

Did you know that local musician Eric Neal (The Slack, countless other bands) makes puppets? No? Well, now you do. You can see his creations in action in a video just produced by Neal, also starring the singing and songwriting talents of his significant other, Camille Cortinas. The vid's super cute -- kids should eat it up. I could totally see Sesame Street snatching this couple up.

Setlist: Bowling For Soup at House of Blues

Promo2.jpg

In advance of the mid-October release of its pop-gems-packed new CD Sorry for Partyin', local boys done good Bowling For Soup stopped at House of Blues last night for a raucous hour-and-a-half set. Tickets were only $7.11 thanks to the official tour sponsor, Slurpee. There was even a Slurpee-shaped guitar trotted out for lead singer Jaret Reddick at one pont. Hey, if you're gonna have a sponsor, pick one that gives you custom git-fiddles, right?

Anyway, read on after the jump for an annotated setlist from last night's show.

Playlist: Comedian Bill Burr

Tonight, one of my favorite comedians begins a weekend at the Improv. I like Bill Burr because his material doesn't sound at all forced - he's inherently funny, and his Bahhston accent makes the delivery that much better. Now, it was a little difficult to find a fairly clean YouTube clip, so you'll have to settle for a radio interview (above). But look up his stuff - you'll definitely want to check him out live after that.

Anyhoo, he's the latest celebrity to send us a personal playlist. You'll see that he's got a taste for the classics.

ACDC - Spellbound: Very unique in that it's one of the only AC/DC songs that isn't about balls, the devil, or alcohol.

TED HEATH ORCHESTRA -- Elks Parade: I like this song because I'm a nerd who enjoys big band music played in stereo.

AEROSMITH - Woman of the World: Aerosmith back when they were young and sounded like they all had hepatitis.

HERBIE HANCOCK - Palm Grease: I love all instrumental music from the '70s. (And I don't mean that in an ironic way, you hipster [expletive]s)

PRIMUS - My Friend Fats: Tim Alexander's double bass!

MOTLEY CRUE - Hooligan's Holiday: Underrated cut off that EP when John Corabi took over for Vince Neil.

JANE'S ADDICTION - Then She Did: Beautiful song,

NEIL YOUNG - Unknown Legend: I like this song because it for some reason it makes me think that every decision I made for the last 30 years was the wrong one.

THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT - Philadelphia Experiment: I love QuestLove's drumming. I also love the album "in a silent way" and this song kind of brings both vibes together.

NAT TOWNSLEY TRIO- Nat Thang: Found about this guy watching a drum video. Love his playing.

Get tickets to a show here.

Hot and fresh: AwkQuarius, 'Whackwordz'

awk.jpgAs promised in this week's paper, here's the new track from AwkQuarius, the new project from local rappers Pikahsso and Tahiti. "Whackwordz" is certainly not wack, but it is wacky. Let's just say someone's been watching the hell out of 'Sound of Music.'

Sure Shot: Q&A w/ DFW's Tum Tum [Rap Monster]

tumtum.jpg

Dallas rapper Tum Tum aka Zillaman is one of DFW's most well-known artists from the local hip-hop scene. His major label affiliated "Caprice Musik" single made noise nationally and he remains a consistent force in the Southern mix tape circuit. We caught up with the busy Tumzilla to get the scoop on his new full length album, "Tum Thousand & 9:The Grassy Knoll".

Check out this week's Quick issue or read here to get the full story, Ya dig!

Setlist: Blink-182 at Superpages

Last night's show at Superpages.com Center brought forth equal parts pop-punk and potty humor, as headliner Blink-182 and opening acts Fall Out Boy, All-American Rejects and Asher Roth played to a near-capacity crowd.

Roth, the up-and-coming rapper who appeared earlier this summer at House of Blues, and AAR thrilled early arrivers with their respective biggest hits, "College" and "Gives You Hell." Fall Out Boy's 12-song set (including "Dance, Dance" and a tongue-in-cheek cover of "Don't Stop Believin'") was a bit of a mess soundwise, and bassist Pete Wentz was the only member who seemed to care about connecting with the audience.

By contrast, Blink-182's never looked or sounded better. The San Diego three-piece's reunion (after a band breakup five years ago and drummer Travis Barker's near-death experience in a plane crash last year) seems to have lit a fire. Flawless renditions of all their hits were embellished by state-of-the-art lighting, dramatic black curtains and a flying drum platform. Not that Barker needs tricks -- he's an amazing drummer on his own, as evidenced by a couple of breakneck, unbelievable solos.

After the jump, check out last night's setlists from Fall Out Boy and Blink.

Day Tripper: Best events for Thursday, Sept. 24

It's been awhile since the Polyphonic Spree played around here, so fans of the super-sized Dallas pop group led by Tim DeLaughter will probably flock to this free show. All you have to do for tickets is sign up at a special Southern Comfort Web site, or send a text. With DJ Lord. 8 p.m. at the Palladium Ballroom, 1135 S. Lamar St. Free. Visit southerncomfort.com/undercover or text "DALLAS" to 68405 for a ticket code.

Denton's pop-punk superstars Bowling for Soup are ramping up for the October release of their album Sorry for Partyin', which features the not-so-subtle first single "My Wena." This is your chance to see the guys in front of a hometown crowd, and tickets are only $7.11, thanks to a tie-in with the tour's sponsor -- duh -- 7-Eleven. With Red Car Wire and Holy Moly. 8 p.m. House of Blues, 2200 N. Lamar St. $7.11. 1-800-745-3000.
ticketmaster.com.

Boston funnyman Bill Burr has been one of the better touring comics out there for years, and he got a major boost from his appearances on Chappelle's Show and a Comedy Central special. Expect sharp commentary on relationships, race and current events. 8 p.m. (also various times Friday through Sunday). Addison Improv, 4980 Belt Line Road, Suite 250. $17 and $20. 972-404-8501. improv.com.

Austin singer-songwriter Bob Schneider plays in Dallas so much that he probably considers it his second home. He even found a local label (Kirtland Records) to release his new album, Lovely Creatures. It comes out next week, but Schneider takes the stage at the Granada Theater at 8 p.m. to celebrate it. $19 and $24. granadatheater.com. Hear some tracks at

Tony Rey at Ozona Bar and Grill. $2 well drinks. Music begins at 9 p.m. 4615 Greenville Ave. No cover. 214-265-9105. ozonagrill.com.

Girls Night Out at Plush. $2 martinis until 11 p.m. 5:30 p.m. 1400 Main St. No cover. 214-606-1203. plushdallas.com.

Playlist: David Kitz of Princeton

Been listening to Cocoon of Love, the album coming Sept. 29 from LA indie pop band Princeton. The foursome deftly incorporates Beach Boy harmonies, light African rhythms and '80s mope-vocals (see above video) into its tunes. It's a mix I find hard to resist.

The guys will stop at the Granada tonight to open for equally ear-pleasing band Ra Ra Riot. Princeton drummer David Kitz was nice enough to put together a little playlist to give us an idea of what inspires him and his bandmates. Read on:

1. Michael McDonald: "What a fool believes" -- This song never gets old for me. Although it's cheezy, it's a deceptively complex and well crafted pop song ... and I love Michael's smoky voice.

2. Gilberto Gil: "Marginalia II" -- This one is from his album, '1968.' The whole record is amazing but this one always stood out to me. It has incredible horn arrangements and cool rhythms.

3. Neu!: "After Eight" -- This is the last of the 6 tracks on 'Neu! '75.' It's a great example of what made them so great. It's minimal, energetic, and I always though it was a great closer for the record.

4. The Beach Boys: "Let Him Run Wild" -- This song is just really full of great hooks and harmonies. This is another track that never gets old for me.

5. Emitt Rhodes: "With my face on the floor" -- This one opens his self-titled record and is full of driving energy... definitely a feel-good song.

Find out more about tonight's show here.

Day Tripper: Best events for Wednesday, Sept. 23

Blink-182 and Fall Out Boy couldn't have a better musical match than each other. Both have an infectious sense of fun in their music (and videos), with the reunited Blink's, humorous slice-of-life tunes ("What's My Age Again?") and Fall Out producing catchy melodies polished off with Patrick Stump's soulful singing ("Dance, Dance"). 6:30 p.m. Superpages.com Center, 1818 1st Ave. $25-$69.50. ticketmaster.com.

Pink's been through her ups and downs in the music biz, but she always seems to come out on top. Most of the time, it's with the power of a delectable pop song. Her latest hits include the sassy kiss-off number "So What" and the rousing love song "Please Don't Leave Me." 7:30 p.m. American Airlines Center, 2500 Victory Ave. $39.50 and $49.50. ticketmaster.com.

- First, check out a few pictures (one is above) from the recording sessions for Doug Burr's next full-length album, the official follow-up to On Promenade that's coming out next year.

- Then, set aside about 13 minutes to watch some stunning video from Telegraph Canyon's recent Bass Hall debut. (Couldn't figure out a way to embed it, or I would've.) It was put together by You & Yours Productions. Telegraph Canyon plays for free Sunday at Good Records.

KERA unloads details about new music station

Art and Seek has all the pertinent details, but here's the short version: KXT 91.7 will make its debut Nov. 9 with local chunks in the mornings and evenings and some of NPR's music programs during the day. Shows most likely to play local artists will be KXT Texas Mix on Fridays at lunchtime and The Paul Slavens Show Sunday nights. At Good Records, Balis is as fab as the Fab 4

pastmast.jpgLast week at local store Good Records, the remastered Beatles CDs took over the sales chart. The only non-Fab-4 title to slip into the top 10 was Dallas country singer Danny Balis' debut album. We'll get back to you later on whether Danny considers himself a Lennon or a McCartney.

1. The Beatles, Revolver
2. The Beatles, Abbey Road
3. The Beatles, Rubber Soul
4. The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
5. Danny Balis, Too Much Living
6. The Beatles, The Beatles (the white album)
7. The Beatles, Magical Mystery Tour
8. The Beatles In Mono box set
9. The Beatles, Please Please Me
10. The Beatles, With the Beatles

Having pretty much OD'ed on these Beatles reissues for the last 7 days, I'll reveal that the singles and rarities collection Past Masters is the most played in my vehicle so far. Its selections cover a wide range, from "Love Me Do" to "Hey Jude." And most of the songs are ones I hadn't already played a gajillion times before these remasters changed the world as we know it*. But if you only want to pick up a couple of the remastered albums, go for Abbey Road and Revolver. Good Records shoppers aren't wrong on that one.

*Minor exaggeration.

An 'American Saturday Night' with Brad Paisley

Thumbnail image for Brad_kids.jpg

He's a three-time Grammy winner, a seven-time 2009 CMA award nominee and the golden boy of country music, but Brad Paisley is undoubtedly a nice guy first.

At a small gathering before his concert at the Superpages.com Center last night, Brad met with 10 local kids who were picked to be edited into a special version of his "Welcome to the Future" vid, the most recent single from his American Saturday Night release. While you can see the official version of the video here, this localized version was shown on the screen during the concert and featured Dallas landmarks and the kids saying, "When I grow up, I want to be a ______."

A father of two young sons himself, Brad joked with the kids and thanked them for hamming it up for his song that's about children and their dreams for the future. I asked Brad if he has any hopes for what his children want to be when they grow up. An easy answer: "Anything they want to be," he said, adding that he's "not one of those dads."

But he is a big fan of Dallas and the state, he says, and when he swings through, there's one thing he remembers most about the city. Our awesome Tex-Mex? The state fair? Our hot nightclubs? Our friendly nature? Nope. "The reason you know it's Dallas," Brad said, "is cuz you're standing in front of road construction."

Awww... now that hurts.

Cuz it's true.

As for the concert, spirits stayed high in spite of the rain. Well, at least mine did. I had dry seats under the awning of the amphitheater, so it was hard to tell if fans watching from the lawn area were suffering in the deluge or making it a party. With country-music concert-goers, you'd have to guess party.

Jimmy Wayne and Dierks Bentley ("Sideways") banged out energetic, opening sets before Paisley was cheered through many of his big hits: "I'm Gonna Miss Her," "Letter to Me," "Celebrity," "I'm Still a Guy" and "She's Everything." All in all, a great show for sure, and I was also impressed that Brad is so artsy as well. He painted the background for his American Saturday Night album cover (shown partially in the backdrop in the pic above) and was credited with some clever cartoon graphics playing during some of the concert footage.

Must be something to lean back on in case, you know, that whole singing thing doesn't work out...

Surely to chap the hides of struggling musicians everywhere ...

This news, from AP:

DALLAS (AP) -- This weekend's Dallas-Tampa Bay matchup will feature a little more head-banging than most NFL games.
The heavy metal band Free Reign, which includes three Cowboys offensive linemen, will debut its new song "Rise Up" during Sunday's Fox telecast of the game in Tampa Bay.
The band is made up of Marc Colombo on guitar and vocals, Cory Procter on drums, Leonard Davis on bass and non-football player Justin Chapman on guitar.
The song is described by Riot Entertainment in a news release issued by the Cowboys on Friday as a "soon to be embraced stadium anthem." The band's EP "Tragedy" is expected to be released in November.

Playlist: Leah Pipes of 'Sorority Row'

'Sorority Row' is one of those movies that you see when you feel like throwing every bit of your good taste out the window. Which is most days for me. Team Audrina!

Anyway, in anticipation for the sorority-prank-gone-wrong horror-thriller, we asked star Leah Pipes to give us a little celebrity playlist. She came through via e-mail with some downright mature selections, in effect rubbing her good taste in my face. Bitch.

Take it away, Leah!
3137.jpg

Pink Floyd's "Jugband Blues" - 1st song off of A Saucerful of Secrets. Not as famous as some of their other songs, but really great nonetheless.

Led Zeppelin's "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" - Off of Led Zeppelin 3 but if you can find the live version from How the West Was Won, do it. It's awesome!

Parliament's "Express Yourself" - If I'm having a bad day this song never fails to put me in a good mood.

Bob Dylan's "It's Alright Ma" - The song is really long and the music itself is pretty basic, but it has some of the best lyrics I've ever heard.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros' "Home" - A friend just burned me a CD with this song and I can't stop listening to it. It makes me want to fall in love.

'Sorority Row' opens tomorrow in wide release.

Harder Beat folds after 16 years

usa_harder_beat_2006.jpgSince 1993, independent rock magazine Harder Beat has provided coverage of the local and touring music scenes from the fan's perspective. You could find it at record stores, bars and other businesses around town. Its presence in the racks signaled to visitors and newbies that Dallas has a thriving hardcore music scene.

But presence alone apparently couldn't pay the bills or keep fatigue from setting in for founder and editor Linda Hollar, who ended the mag's 16-year run with this month's issue. In her goodbye letter, she recounts her history with the publication and laments how difficult it'd become to keep a print publication afloat.

"It was so much work and so frustrating trying to get ads," Hollar told us over the phone today. "At one time, we had lots of local support. Bands and clubs bought ads. Now, everybody thinks they can get by with a MySpace page. It's happened to every print pub across the country to some degree."

Hollar seemed relieved to no longer have to deal with the pressures of getting Harder Beat to the printer each month, but there was also some heartbreak in her voice when she talked about having to tell contributors and supporters that she was calling it quits.

"When I started this, I didn't do it for the money. I did it mostly for the concert tickets, because seeing rock and writing about it was fun."

That's definitely the way of thinking that came through in Harder Beat's text-heavy pages. Album and concert reviews and news from the hard-rock scene were written by people whose passion for the subject was more important than a paycheck.

Hollar says she won't keep the mag alive online for now, but she's not closing the door to those seriously interested in reviving it.

"This isn't something you can do when you've already got a full-time job weighing you down, so we'll see if anyone serious comes along," she said.

Kelly Clarkson meets one of her idols

The happy meeting

Burleson's own Kelly Clarkson, the original American Idol, played a packed house at Winstar on Sunday night. Here's the official review of the show from the Dallas Morning News. But I opened my inbox last night to find an unofficial review -- from Kirtland Records' Tami Thomsen.

Thomsen and Toadies lead singer Vaden Todd Lewis went to the show and ended up meeting Kelly backstage. Why is this notable? Well, for one, Kelly's mentioned Vaden and the Toadies as her favorite band in interviews every year since she competed on Idol. She says she tries to catch every Toadies show she can, that she loves their music because it's "sexy, dirty, drunk, broken. Anything about rock swagger I learned from them."

So this meeting was a long time coming, and an exciting moment for both parties. Here's Thomsen's account of the experience Sunday night:

Vaden and I made the trip to OK last night. Walked into the concert about 10 minutes before the show; just as we sat down "Possum Kingdom" came on, blaring through the PA. What timing! The show was great. Kelly did an amazing, bluesy version of "Walking After Midnight." ... After the show we were taken to her dressing room. She flipped when she saw Vaden. Had a blast talking with her. There are a few photos on my and Vaden's Facebook pages.

We'll look for those photos and see about showing you one. See blurry mobile photo above.

Day Tripper: Best events for Tuesday, Sept. 8

Starting at midnight, America will witness yet another Beatles invasion, with remastered versions of all the band's classic albums hitting stores tomorrow for the first time in two decades, as well as the release of the long-awaited video game The Beatles: Rock Band.

The big bash in Dallas will occur tonight at midnight at Good Records. The Lower Greenville store will host an all-out Beatles celebration, including an early performance from the Dandy Warhols (possibly covering "Blackbird," we're told) and screenings of Magical Mystery Tour and Yellow Submarine. Local Fab Four cover band A Hard Night's Day will count down the minutes to midnight with a late performance.

Good Records manager Chris Penn says there'll be beer flowing and plenty of prizes (especially for the winner of the Beatles: Rock Band tourney). And at the end of all the fun, you'll be able to buy those remastered albums.

Details: 8 p.m. at Good Records, 1808 Greenville Ave. goodrecords.com.

Artsy Oregon rockers Dandy Warhols have a new album, The Dandy Warhols Are Sound, and a theatrical sense of style in concert. Metal quartet Mudvayne sometimes aims for shock value with scary, painted-on, dripping-with-fake-blood masks. But the Illinois band also puts out some serious rock music. Black Label Society and Static-X round out the head-banging bill. 6 p.m. Nokia Theatre, 1001 Performance Place, Grand Prairie. $45. 1-800-745-3000. ticketmaster.com.

Section 8 comedy show from 9 to 11 p.m. at Ozona. $1.50 domestic longnecks. 4615 Greenville Ave. $10. 214-265-9105. ozonagrill.com.

93.3 finally reveals new format

After hours of teasing (Will it be classic country? Smooth jazz? Lithuanian talk, as Junior Miller suggested this morning on The Ticket?), 93.3 is finally out with its new format: "Today's hit music," as they're calling it, which sounds sorta like "Top 40." And the station is calling itself "I-93." Listen online here.

FRIDAY

Stanley Kubrick's dark-comedy masterpiece Dr. Strangelove is one of those must-see-if-you-haven't-already films. The nuclear-crisis plot allows Peter Sellers to soar in multiple roles, including the president and the peculiar title character. George C. Scott's blustery pomp is a hoot. And the movie's final moments -- including Slim Pickens riding a warhead, cowboy-style -- rank among the all-time classics. Midnight (also Saturday at midnight). Inwood Theatre, 5458 W. Lovers Lane. $10. 214-764-9106. www.landmarktheaters.com.

The Detroit rap collective D12, a.k.a. Eminem's posse, is back on the road after an extended hiatus. Group member Proof was killed in 2006. Eminem got back in the game earlier this year with Relapse, and D12 is reportedly working on Pipe Dreams, its first album since 2004's chart-topper D12 World. But don't expect an onstage cameo from Eminem himself. Bizarre, Kuniva, Swifty and Co. should be the stars of this show. 8:30 p.m. Lakewood Theater, 1825 Abrams Parkway. $15. 1-800-745-3000. ticketmaster.com.

British rock veterans the Cult first made a splash in the mid-'80s with their hit "She Sells Sanctuary," and after two reunions, they're banging out the hits once again. Catch them while you can -- lead singer Ian Astbury indicated in July the band may no longer record together. 8:30 p.m. House of Blues, 2200 N. Lamar St. $29.50-$65. 1-800-745-3000. ticketmaster.com.

Versatile comic D.L. Hughley has handled politics (CNN's D.L. Hughley Breaks the News), drama (Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip) and very silly humor (Scary Movie 3, Soul Plane). He's at his best onstage, so get to the Improv for his sharp take on current events. 8 and 10:30 p.m. (also various times Saturday and Sunday). Addison Improv, 4980 Belt Line Road, Suite 250. $30. 972-404-8501. improv.com.

Rubber Gloves' week of no-cover shows continues with Sleep Whale, Dust Congress, Fergus & Geronimo, New Science Projects and Emil Rapstine. 9 p.m. Rubber Gloves, 411 E. Sycamore St., Denton. No cover. 940-387-7781. rubberglovesdentontx.com.

The long wait for a new release is almost over for witty Dallas pop group Happy Bullets. Hydropanic at the Natatorium will be released this fall. With Drawn by Jaymz. 8 p.m. Lee Harvey's, 1807 Gould St. No cover. 214-428-1555. leeharveys.com.

It's nothing but fun when Denton band Boxcar Bandits gets together to play loose, beer-soaked bluegrass. With the Dan Family. 10 p.m. at the Moon Bar, 2911 W. Berry St., Fort Worth. $6. 817-926-9600. themoonbar.com.

Becky Middleton, Summer Ames and Camille Cortinas graced the cover of Quick last week, and now they're getting ready to share a bill for the first time. Opening Bell's not a huge place, so get there early to snag a seat. 8:30 p.m. Opening Bell South Side, 1409 S. Lamar St. $6. 214-565-0383. openingbellcoffee.com.

The House Party at M Street Bar. DJ ATG spins hip-hop and Top 40. No cover for ladies before 10:30 p.m. Party starts at 9 p.m. 3520 Greenville Ave. $10. 214-370-5500. mstreetbar.com.

New music: Maleveller, Boys Named Sue

Photo of Maleveller by Jason Janik

In this week's issue, out today, you'll find a feature on Dallas metal newcomers Maleveller (above). It includes a Q&A with lead singer Brian Smith, who tells us that the band will start working on an album in the next few months. In the meantime, though, you can get a taste of the Maleveller sound by downloading three demos over at Parade of Flesh. Good tunes, but not a substitute for seeing the guys live. Do that as soon as you can.

Thumbnail image for Boys Named Sue Road Pic.JPG

And in the Liner Notes column, I give you a heads-up on the Boys Named Sue CD release events planned for next week.

To mark Idol Records' release of the new album The Hits Vol. Sue!, the Boys will take over the Libertine on Tuesday night for a listening party. Writes singer John Pedigo in an e-mail, "We have purchased a keg for the event. Thus, party to the maximus. Come on down. It'll be great! Like going to the Mac-Donalds!" And if you like what you hear on Tuesday, you'll want to attend the official CD-release show on Sept. 11 (with the King Bucks) at Sons of Hermann.

Here's a song from the new album to tide you over until Tuesday. Stream it hard.

Welcome back, Whitney

Thumbnail image for whitney_album.jpg

I don't own any Whitney Houston albums [kicking The Bodyguard soundtrack under desk], but I've always admired her big voice and even bigger white teeth. (See "Exhale -- Shoop Shoop" video.) Who hasn't?

So with the release of her new album I Look to You, Whitney takes to the stage on Good Morning America (6 a.m. Central) tomorrow for her first performance in seven years. (The four-song concert was actually already recorded today in Central Park). Then on Sept. 14, Oprah gets Whitney's first big interview.

Seven years. Has it been that long for one of music's biggest stars to get it together? Hell to the yes. Is she going to seem wiser, take a look back and be like, "Man, I'm over all that crap"? We hope so. Is she going to sweat profusely? Prolly.

At the very least, it'll be interesting to see if her face now even remotely looks like her overly air-brushed album cover...

Next week, Good goes Beatles-crazy

Next Wednesday, America will witness yet another Beatles invasion, with remastered versions of all the band's classic albums hitting stores for the first time in two decades, as well as the release of the long-awaited video game The Beatles: Rock Band. [Begins to hyperventilate.]

But the big bash in Dallas will occur the night before at Good Records. On Tuesday, the Lower Greenville store will host an all-out Beatles celebration, including an early performance from the Dandy Warhols (possibly covering "Blackbird," we're told) and screenings of Magical Mystery Tour and Yellow Submarine. Local Fab Four cover band A Hard Night's Day will count down the minutes to midnight with a late performance.

Good Records manager Chris Penn says there'll be beer flowing and plenty of prizes (especially for the winner of the Beatles: Rock Band tourney). And at the end of all the fun, you'll be able to buy those remastered albums (or the additional mono and stereo box sets being released).

Now that you know what Good's got planned, it'd be pretty silly to wait and grab your Beatles goods at a big-box store.

Day Tripper: Best events for Tuesday, Sept. 1

The perfect end-of-summer mix

Photo of Killtron by Jason Janik
Hey, it ain't like I've got the exclusive on Killtron's new mix, "Back up. Stack up. Sweat!" I'm probably jumping on it a few days late, to be honest. But it's been a helluva Monday companion, and for that, I'm thankful. He throws in a bunch of stuff that's danceable, but still sufficiently dark (I like when NIN's "Down In It" fades in). Very fitting for the summer-fall transition. Get the mix here.

Oh, and while you're in downloading mode, check out these three mixes we featured a while back. These will keep you happy for hours.

FRIDAY

Visions: The Women's Expo unites shopping, cooking and relaxation services under one roof. Where else can you hone your makeup tips, watch a pole-dancing demonstration and learn about the latest in home design, all at the same time? 5 p.m. (also Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) Dallas Market Hall, 2200 N. Stemmons Freeway. $10. adjuvantexpos.com/visions.

It's little wonder why rockers Tantric have maintained a solid following since they busted out of Louisville, Ky., in 1999. Hugo Ferreira's guttural growl over up-tempo melodies, ferocious guitars -- and sometimes electric violin -- makes for imaginative, ear-pleasing stuff. Their new album, Mind Control, just adds to the aural interest. 8 p.m. Trees, 2709 Elm St. $10.21. 214-741-1122. treesdallas.com.

Zombies usually aren't all that funny. Decomposed, slow and oozing with goo? Sure. But not funny. Simon Pegg's 2004 horror-comedy flick Shaun of the Dead shows that you can giggle with the undead. Just make sure you're relatively close to your favorite tavern, have a girlfriend way hotter than you deserve and a portly best friend who makes you laugh at every turn. Midnight (also Saturday at midnight). Inwood Theatre, 5458 W. Lovers Lane. $10. 214-764-9106. landmarktheatres.com.

Tommy C Productions and Access Dallas present House Party at M Street Bar. No cover for ladies before 11 p.m. Music provided by DJ ATG.10 p.m. 3520 Greenville Ave. $10. accessdallas.com.

That Jack Ingram sure can talk ...

The Dallas country star did more than 200 radio interviews in 24 hours. I'm taking bets on how many times he was asked about his influences.

From AP:

Country singer Jack Ingram is talked out.
Guinness World Record spokeswoman Laura Plunkett says Ingram set a record for most consecutive radio interviews in 24 hours.
Ingram gave 215 interviews between 8 a.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. Wednesday as part of a promotional blitz for his new album, Big Dreams & High Hopes.
From the base of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, he spoke by phone with radio stations in most of the 50 states and parts of Canada, Ireland and Australia. He not only broke the record, he annihilated it. The previous mark was 96.
He says in a statement: "After that last 24 hours, I officially have nothing left to say."
Ingram's latest hit, "Barefoot and Crazy," is No. 11 on the Billboard country chart.

Midlake member talks new album in interview

Midlake's Eric Pulido broke the silence about his band's long-awaited new album in an interview with Under the Radar's site last week. No official date to report for The Courage of Others, the follow-up to critical fave The Trials of Van Occupanther, but Pulido did throw out February 2010 of next year as a possibility. And despite the interviewer trying to work every possible angle to get the goods on the new songs, Pulido would only hint at a heavier and darker folk sound for the new stuff, influenced by '70s bands such as Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span. We'll tell you more when there's more to tell. I just hope there's a song on the new set as gorgeous and addictive as "Bandits" (above).

Hot and fresh: Jayson Bales, Telegraph Canyon

NGL_10JaysonBales.JPG

Got a few high-profile CD release shows lined up for the weekend. First up, Dallas singer-songwriter Jayson Bales and his backing band, the Charmers, will debut new set Along the Fault Line on Friday at Poor David's Pub. Haven't had a chance to listen to the whole album just yet, but Jason sent along a new track recently. It's a different sound for him; there's definitely a U2 vibe in there whether intended or not ...

Jayson Bales and the Charmers, "Death Takes No Holiday":

NQ_17telegraphcanyon.JPG

Fort Worth's Telegraph Canyon (featured prominently in this week's print version) take new album The Tide and the Current down I-30 this weekend, playing Bass Hall with the Old 97's Friday and Double Wide with Dove Hunter Saturday. All the new record's songs are great, but here's my favorite, for whatever reason ...

Telegraph Canyon, "A Light in the Field":

And let's not forget Danny Balis' Too Much Living debut Friday at the Granada's anniversary bash. If you haven't already, download first single "Tethered" here.

Playlist: Glen Power of the Script

Apparently there are still a few tickets left to tomorrow night's huge Paul McCartney show at Cowboys Stadium, so get on it.

In the meantime, we thought we'd give the opening act for tomorrow's show a little love. Irish three-piece group the Script has caught ears in the U.S. of late with its smooth, melodic pop hit "The Man Who Can't Be Moved" (video above). Since they know their way around a melody, we asked the guys to tell us what songs they're loving right now. Drummer Glen Power came through with an interesting little list. Listen to his picks and read his thoughts on each song:

1. Elbow - Grounds for Divorce: "I love the vibe of this song, the way the melody kicks in all heavy and the hooks are killer!"

2. Citizen Cope - Bullet in a Target: "The lyrics are very poignant to the times."

3. Train - Calling all Angels: "It's a great message in this song."

4. Miike Snow - Animal: "I love his whole flow on his vocals."

5. The Police - Every Breath You Take: "Love the simple vibe of the drums on this one, the way they accent the song, great song."

6. U2 - Where the Streets Have No Name: "The video for this is amazing and the way the song builds is astounding, the guitars come alive all over the track."

7. Carolina Liar - Show Me What I'm Looking For: "Great hook in this song, great lyrics."

Oops, missed this: Alternative Press exalts the O's

NQ_05quick26.JPG

Jason Janik mentioned a few months back that he'd snapped the O's for an Alternative Press feature, but we had no idea the local bluegrass duo would be named as one of the "100 best bands of 2009" by the mag. Good on 'em. Here's a link to Janik's blog item about the clip.

Day Tripper: Best events for Tuesday, Aug. 18

The energy of Abba's songs weaves through Mamma Mia, the musical about a daughter trying to find out who her father is -- among three different men -- so he can walk her down the aisle on her wedding day. The real challenge here, though, will be getting all those songs out of your head. 8 p.m. (also various times through Aug. 30). Fair Park Music Hall, 909 1st Ave. $25-$80. ticketmaster.com.

Denton DJ Yeahdef brings consistently healthy crowds out to his weekly '90s night. You'll hear a little bit of everything, provided it was released in the last decade. 10 p.m. Hailey's, 122 Mulberry St., Denton. $5 for under 21, no cover for over 21. 940-323-1160. haileysclub.com.

Thievery Corporation coming to HOB

I somehow missed this show announcement the other day -- Thievery Corporation will come to House of Blues on Oct. 4. It's a special show whose proceeds go to the AIDS charity Global Fund. Get your tickets here starting tomorrow. Wonder if the D.C. duo has experienced a bump from the use of its hypnotic music (above) in one of True Blood's creepiest scenes this season (demonic orgy, anyone?). Guess we'll see.

ScarJo's latest musical venture

Scarlett Johansson has teamed up with Pete Yorn for this catchy new duet called "Relator." It's earwormy, indeedy, but ScarJo sings as if she's got a wad of cotton stuck in her throat. Her style's a bit too affected for me, too ... what thinks ye?

Day Tripper: Best events for the weekend

FRIDAY

Historic Deep Ellum club Trees reopens with a reunion of Dallas hard-rock band Slow Roosevelt. Read Hunter's take here. Doors at 7 p.m. 2709 Elm St. $15. treesdallas.com.

Longtime funnyman and Yale School of Drama grad David Alan Grier has had memorable roles on TV (In Living Color, Chocolate News) and movies (The Woodsman, Boomerang, A Soldier's Story). Quentin Tarantino's new war flick Inglourious Basterds will soon be in theaters. If it's half as good as Pulp Fiction, it'll be tremendous. Tarantino's seminal 1994 hit is still a brilliant bit of moviemaking, thanks to the priceless dialogue, primarily between Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta. And there has never been a better scene involving murder, Bible quotes and tasty burgers. Midnight (also on Saturday). Inwood Theatre, 5458 W. Lovers Lane. $10. 214-764-9106 or landmarktheatres.com.

Experimental, upbeat pop duo Disco: Hate is composed of former Mount Righteous members Casey Colby and Clint Parker. They'll celebrate their new CD, Meet Me in the Bathroom, at this show. Hot and fresh: Here in Arms, 'Darlin''

Photo of Here In Arms by Jason Janik

Check out this week's local-music profile, a Q&A with Here In Arms frontman Brent Engel. Fans of Americana are sure to get into these guys. Brent was nice enough to let me share a song from the new vinyl LP Outlaws.

Here In Arms, "Darlin'":

(128K download here)

Says Brent, "'Darlin'' has always been a real special song to me. ... It's about being in love. It puts a smile on my face because I mean every word of it. I wish I was really that smooth!"

If you like what you hear, head to City Tavern Saturday night for the band's CD release show, also featuring RTB2 and Life in Jersey.

Free tix: Los Campesinos! at the Granada

Want a pair of tix to Saturday night's hipsteriffic Los Campesinos!/Girls/Smith Westerns show at the Granada? Congrats to Dorrough on chart success

NQ_20DORROUGH5.JPG

The debut album from the Dallas rapper -- who was recently featured on Quick's cover -- starts out at No. 36 on the Billboard 200 pop albums chart, right behind Kenny Chesney and ahead of Beyonce. Nice work! Wonder how many ice cream paint jobs that will afford him ...

Sure Shot: Maxx Moon lands in DFW tonight [Debut Show]

.

What: Maxx Moon w/ DJ Schwa & Opportunity Assassin

Where: The Lounge (2810 Elm St., Dallas Deep Ellum)

When: Thursday, August 13th

Cost: $6, doors early

As noted in today's "Day Tripper", newly formed hip-hop group Maxx Moon will make their official debut with tonight's Dallas performance at The Lounge. The duo is the creation of the heavy touring lyricist Astronautalis (myspace.com/astronautalis) and the rising star in vocalist/producer Picnictyme (myspace.com/picnictyme).

"If Johnny Cash made an album with Gnarls Barkley and the Gorillaz, it'd sound something like Maxx Moon", described Picnic (who recently produced tracks for rapper Johnny Polygon and "Day n Nite" artist Kid Cudi). They've only leaked a few teaser tracks, so check them out tonight, with special guest Mes the Jive Turkey, if you want a glimpse into their upcoming Maxx Moon project.

Day Tripper: Best events for Thursday, Aug. 13

We've heard a couple of tracks from Maxx Moon, the Picnic-Astronautalis hip-hop duo: last year's hypnotizing leak "Mr. Colourful" and the newer, hyper tune "Urban Outfitters," which is on the 2009 Kixpo mix tape. Here's a chance to see them do their thing live, and hear a few more new tracks. 8 p.m. The Lounge on Elm St., 2810 Elm St. $6-$8.myspace.com/theloungeonelmst.

The full band Teenage Cool Kids offers undeniably catchy indie-pop, while duo Fergus & Geronimo plays a down-and-dirty take on the Motown sound. With Smith Westerns and Girls. 8 p.m. Mable Peabody's, 1215 E. University Drive, Denton. $5. 940-566-9910.

Veteran metal group Judas Priest is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its British Steel album by performing it live in its entirety -- a first. 7 p.m. Nokia Theatre, 1001 Performance Place, Grand Prairie. $59.50. 1-800-745-3000 or ticketmaster.com.

Last night's guest DJ playlist

knon.jpg

Had a great time last night sitting in with Reid Robinson and Sista Whitenoise during their 'Sonic Assembly Power Hour' on KNON-FM 89.3. They took time out from their quarterly pledge drive to let me play some songs I like (you can make pledges to the station and the show in particular here). You'll find my playlist after the jump.

But before that, let me pull out the soapbox for a sec. If you haven't listened to KNON before, do. It's the closest thing to free-form radio that exists in Dallas. Tune in any given night, and you're likely to hear deep blues, Latin, hip-hop and R&B cuts. And Sonic Assembly's playing loads of local artists of all genres during its weekly Tuesday late-night slots. So, listen and learn.

That said, here's what I played last night:

I'll be a guest DJ on tonight's 'Sonic Assembly Power Hour' on KNON-FM 89.3, but that's not the reason you should tune in. Tonight, hosts Reid Robinson and DJ Sista Whitenoise will be doing a little pledge drive for the station. Your dollaz can help an important part of the city stay afloat, so call in, make pledges, and you could even win some concert tix. 10 p.m. to midnight. Don't forget!

Cool Kids/Clipse show a no go? (Yep)

Say it ain't so! The word got out after a press release from AEG this morning included a line about Wednesday's Cool Kids/Clipse show at the Granada being called off. Well, there's no official verdict from the Granada yet -- venue reps tell us they're in talks with show organizers at the moment, but can't explain the situation any further. We'll get more info if the cancellation is finalized (as well as info about refunds.) But until then, let's all hold out hope for a last-minute miracle ...

UPDATE: No word yet from the Granada, but Gorilla vs. Bear (who's listed as the show's presenter) tweets, "Dallas: Clipse/Cool Kids show at Granada has been CANCELED. Have no idea why, as we haven't been given any reason, official or otherwise."

UPDATE #2: Granada confirms in a tweet: "OK...it is finally official. Clipse & The Cool Kids have cancelled their show. Refunds on the way... So sorry guys, we're disappointed too!"

UPDATE #3: Word from a PR source is that Cool Kids are trying to resked show for next month. We shall see ...

(Hey, if the Cool Kids can't make it, why not let this band play? I like it better live, anyway.)

House of Blues to let local musicians take over the restaurant

jwb.jpg

OK, that headline might have been a tad misleading. You're not going to be eating corporate-approved Southern dishes prepared by dirty band boys. House of Blues will begin turning over its restaurant stage, known as the Voodoo Lounge Stage, to local and regional up-and-comers on a weekly basis. The "Tomorrow's Headliners Concert Series" kicks off Wednesday with a performance by the Josh Weathers Band (above). Cover's $5. More deets from the press release (and a schedule) after the jump.
